Does anyone have a 2018 and installed a locking gas cap? I bought one and it worked fine for a couple weeks. Then one day I got a warning on the display to check engine and the crawl control light was stuck on. I had it towed to the dealer and they said it detected a fuel vacuum leak due to an after market gas cap. Which locking gas cap brand does not set off this false alarm?

good question. not sure but maybe a lockable fuel door could be a plan B. maybe checking the seal on the cap and making sure it seats properly will fix the issue

My wife has a 2018 Runner, and we bought a locking gas cap because idiots at Toyota did not install locking fuel doors to protect our engines from sugar terrorists and gas thieves. We had the exact same problem, and I also had her Runner towed to the dealer. They said the exact same thing and probably laughed to each other about another victim. I am considering using the same cap again and having my wife make sure to tighten all the way after refueling. It had worked for a while, and so I’m assuming it worked. Hopefully, she just didn’t tighten it enough last time. We are considering the plan B as well, but women don’t like the after market parts look like men do. So we’re going to retry plan A again and take the risk again. Maybe if this keeps happening, Toyota will get tired of it and stop making non locking fuel doors to save themselves a few dollars in profits. We’re under extended warranty, and they will have to pay for it again.

Here is another thread found using the search feature.... I do wish the fuel door on the 4 was lockable or locked, but if I was a gas thief I would not even waste my time with the gas cap/fuel door. I would drill a hole into the tank with my cordless drill and drain it right into my gas can. Easy peasy.
