It's a little more money but I would look into beefy crossbars like Ragos or LFD's, for instance, if I was not going to go full roof rack. Those cross bars increase the versatility of the stock rack big time

Yeah the money part is the big hold up. I've looked into them and they are usually out of stock so I was just going to do something with what I've got.

I hear ya, it's always about the money with this stuff. I have spent ridiculous money IMO on this vehicle already and I'm not even close to done..... They may only make them per order, I would call them to find out if that is what you want to do.

I'll look into them some more and see if that's the way I need to go.

Just stuck with 1 income for awhile until the CFO gets out of graduate school and then I can make some bigger purchases. Lol

WallyT4R, i was looking at the LFD cross bars if i couldnt track down the trail ones. they will be my next move for the roof when i need to beef up the support. i like their system. at the moment, i dont need a ton of support up top, so i dont want to put the $ out when I have other mods that i wanna prioritize. and of course i cant figure out how to prioritize! haha

@BravesRunner ill definitely hit you up

Went to the dealer to try and get transfer case oil. Parts guy tells me they can't get any that it only comes in bulk. In other words, pay for the service....anyone else run into this issue? Know where to buy the transfer case oil?
They said the auto parts store??? I thought Toyota only oil in this transfer case

    Not really an answer.
What does the owners manual say about type? Just use reccomend type. No?
I avoid buld oil or fluids like the plague!
How often are those tanks or trucks flushed out?
Maybe it comes from changing oil @ a car wash as a kid...

Well I called another dealer and he said it's just 75w90 synthetic gear oil and it doesn't matter if it's Toyota or not. Now I'm just confused

I have the Amsoil in the front and rear diffs, so you went with Mobil 1- 75 w 90 in the transfer case?
Don't know where I heard Toyota oil only in that transfer case but someone was saying Toyota only because it has special detergents and stuff in it

I found this. I couldn’t find the oil myself but with changes around the 15k mark I’m not sure if the detriment of using the 75/90 GL5 oil

    https://trail4runner.com/2018/12/24/4runner-driveline-fluids-how-and-when-to-change-them/

Here is where Toyota makes things more difficult, and where the controversy begins.

Toyota specifies their Genuine Transfer gear oil SAE 75w or equivalent as a proper fluid for the transfer case. The problem is that this weight of oil is very uncommon. So uncommon that the only 75w options available are the original OEM fluid, and Ravenol’s SAE 75w manual transmission fluid. To make things moreinteresting, Redline specifies that their 75w-85 is a substitute for SAE 75w weight oils (matching OEM specs). The one big caveat to these options, are that neither of them are a directmatch for the OEM fluid. The reason for this is that Toyota hasn’t disclosed the formula for their 75w transfer gear oil, so third party companies haven’t been able to create an equivalent oil matching Toyota’s specs.

[EDIT 12/28/2018]: ROYAL PURPLE SYNCHROMAX MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID IS ALSO RECOMMENDED BY ROYAL PURPLE AS A SUITABLE REPLACEMENT FOR THE TOYOTA GENUINE TRANSFER GEAR OIL. THEY ALSO HAVE A GUARANTEE THAT STATES ANY DEFECTS OR PROBLEMS CAUSED DIRECTLY BY THE USE OF THEIR RECOMMENDED PRODUCT WILL BE COVERED FOR REPAIR BY ROYAL PURPLE.
To try to sort things out, forum members have contacted Redline directly asking for a recommendation on Toyota transfer case fluids. They consistently respond stating that they don’t have a recommendation because they don’t have access to Toyota’s specifications. In addition, the Ravenol fluid has been compared directly to the OEM fluid by submitting virgin samples to Blackstone Labs. The results showed a similar composition, however, the Toyota brand fluid contained a number of additives that supposedly are designed to help protect the specific transfer case components from excessive wear.

Why the great debate? Why not go with the Toyota fluid? The biggest factors are cost and availability. Toyota Genuine SAE 75w Transfer gear oil is notoriously hard to find, and by comparison very expensive. When asked, some dealers can’t order the fluid directly. Thankfully online distributors make purchasing the Toyota fluid easier, and a bit more affordable. Most costs range from $60 to $90 per 1 liter can, depending on shipping and source. This is much more expensive than third-party alternatives which is why many people stray from the OEM “liquid gold” when changing their fluids.

There is one more alternative to add to this mix. It’s well documented that another popular fluid replacement for the 4Runner transfer case is the easy to find 75w90 GL-5 weight gear oil. Many have used this weight with no issues that have been a direct result of improper fluid weight. I personally used Redline 75w90 in my transfer case for approximately 30 thousand miles without any negative side effects. When researching the subject keep in mind that while some will tell you on a forum thread “if you use fluid other than the Toyota specified gear oil your transfer case will blow up”, there aren’t any specific examples of a transfer case failing due to improper fluid.

    The Bottom Line

Depending on your specific usage, your intervals for changing transfer case gear oil will range from approximately 30 to 60 thousand miles. For that service interval, the cost of purchasing the more expensive Toyota fluid is worth it. Knowing that it’s exactly what the transfer case needs to perform at its peak makes the initial price easier to swallow.”

Not sure what to think of this...
Almost 2x the price of all others & Royal Purple is sold out.
I would use one of these if you need a fluid change.
No crap or rust in bottom of tank...
I was on my way to the parts store! Lol

    *Edit* This was an Autozone
I am usually a Valvoline or Mobil 1 guy.
If Mobil 1 is what the supercars (recommend on oil cap), it should be okay in my T4R! Lol
Royal Purple may be snake oil... Yes, I have seen the videos.

I'm running Redline 75w85 in my transfer case. Shifts smoother than it did with the factory fill oil.

FWIW... I put Redline 75w85 in my front and rear diff's as well.

That's only half the fender liner mod. Now you need to cut that lip off the bottom of the bumper.

Brand new razor blade so it's nice and sharp. Cut a little at a time until it's flush with the fender liner.

Got the windshield replaced. Was free for the 4. Also got the Camry windshield replaced, it was a bad winter for windshields here for me. Had to pay $280 for the Camry cuz I only have liability on it.
