Some weekends I'm on deep rutted dirt and trying to cross shallow muddy streams, or perhaps fight out of a snowed in embankment.
Other weekends I'm hauling 5 giggly 12 yo girls to raging waters or the mall.
I need captains chairs because I don't want to flip a midrow seat everytime somebody else's kid needs to get in/out of the 3rd row.
I'm done trying to negotiate unmaintained dirt roads at 13,000 ft (White Mountain) with my unibody awd, GMC Acadia, which has about 6" clearance, plus the tranny just blew at 100k mi, which is why I'm here.
Was looking forward to getting a CPO 4Runner, but disappointed that there's no captain chairs available. Now looking at 2017 GX, but the AHC and KDSS failures scare me, the way turbo's were scary in the 80's and 90's.
What else would fit my need for a 3 row mid-size 4wd truck-frame suv with captain's chairs?

It's really a tough order to fill. I'm thinking you're going to have to compromise somewhere.

    WTH?

Souped up Monster Sienna from Bizarro's alternate universe?

Okay, I'm sorry I asked my question. I'll withdraw my query immediately. Just stop it now . . .

I can't really think of any good off road vehicles with captain's chairs.

I don't know much about the GX, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. It's the same platform as the 4runner (I think), but more luxurious and with a V8.

Or get the 4runner and deal with the seat-flipping.

I can pretty much guarantee you won't be putting a transmission in either one anytime soon.

I’m hung up on the captains chairs and KDSS failures.

    Have me like.

Mid size BOF? You’re either in one of three vehicles, Wrangler, 4Runner, GX460. Third row? Down to the 4Runner and GX. Captains chairs? Now you’re down to the GX, but in at least the Premium model.

    I thought about this...
Get the best T4R & have a custom shop install captain's chairs in the rear!
It would give you a lot of space & options!
This is looking more appealing & we don't have kids...
    Just an idea.

Thanks everyone for the input (except for the monster sienna post - the image creeps into my nightmares now).

I'm settled on a 2017 GX460 in premium trim. The CPO offerings with captain chairs I've located within 800mi are a wee too expensive for me now, in the low 40's, yet I want to keep it under 40, so I'm going to wait until the 2020 model is out to see what 2017 lease or trade-in vehicles get turned in.

After I buy the GX and after the unlimited mile CPO warranty eventually expires, my thinking is to avoid worrying about the KDSS failure by pro-actively purchasing a used/salvaged KDSS from a compatible T4R, and just having it as a spare. When failure occurs, I can do the swap myself, then take it to the dealer to pressurize the fluid.

    What was I thinking.

I don't really need captains chairs.

What I really need are a pair of swiveling "camping chairs" mounted to the fold-down tailgate, with a center champagne service platform, of course.

Did I say I didn't want to spend over 40? I meant not over 400.
