When my a/c is set to on and the temp is set from 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock the air coming out alternates between hot and cold as opposed to a consistent temp coming out. Do others experience the same thing? Thanks

put a temp gauge in the vent .
possible the a/c system is low on refrigerant or when the outside air temps are low the ac compressor will turn off then the temp will rise.
the compressor will turn off with cold temps because the pressure will drop this is to protect the compressor from a lack of oil/refrigerant to lube the cylinders..

I do not operate the ac if I am looking to get a warmer temp.

Nope, my AC has been pumping out freezing cold air for 23 years and has never been recharged......

never charged 23 yrs ? having an ac license this is a very uncommon condition on the servicing of an auto vehicles refrigeration . so you never had a tech put gauges on it to confirm the system has a proper amount of refrigerant. being so old compressor or electrical problems may cause the compressor to shutdown . or a restriction in the system which can cause this also . ac compressors are not like engines . we change the oil in the engines often, but the ac system is not done over a 1/4 of a century the compressor will create a metal sludge that will cause these type problems also.

I should have not responded to this question because , I THOUGHT it was a 5th gen runner .

It's a 5th Gen. It's a weird issue for sure. Shop says coolant is fine and couldn't find anything else. They asked Toyota who said it was within operating limits. I disagree

Marietta Toyota. They also did a system flush which leaves a horrible chemical smell.

Maybe you misunderstood me? I have NEVER touched my heating/AC system, ever, and it works like brand new.:)

    You're lucky...

A/C in my Tacoma developed a leak in 2017 when the truck was just shy of eight years old and had less than 75K! It took over a year to determine that evaporator core wa star problem!
