Dual batteries 5th gen

I didnt do a single search on the forum lol.

But, does anyone on here, run a dual battery set up in their rig? I've seen a few options sniffing around.

Two smaller cells, in the one stock location.







Then (and my preference) with the stock and adding (reserve) one, pass side, back of the engine compartment. I like the thought of 2 large, vs 2 small, and ill never want, or have a air comp. No desire, need what so ever for me.




There is a ton of room there, im sure where most stick a air maker. I want to just do my own. Im not paying anyone 900 bucks to make a bracket, cut some wire, and crimp some lugs/eyelets for me. Although, the one kit, i was reading on (Off Grid Engineering) has a set up, where the brain/isolation unit, leaves the 2 bats as one, until the starter battery sees 12.xx (or whatever) or below, it isolates the two, letting you run the reserve down, and still get off the mountain, or out of the desert and back home. I dig that.
Is there anyone on here, that is running a dual set up ? Lets chat... love to hear from you. Im gonna make this happen. And soon.

There are so many ways to do this. I am torn between putting one in the back by a fridge or using the Shrockworks kit to put one in the front passenger area. Either way I will be using a DC to DC charger instead of the other way because I will use solar and they come with a mppt solar controller built in. Leaning towards the Redarc brand of DC to DC chargers especially if I put it in the back. Still researching and saving cuz none of this stuff is cheap.

 

like the solar idea but it wouldn't work in my case...have too much to carry. wish I could do that. danm

 

I sniffed around for 3 seconds, and spoke to a car guy, that knows his shiz on 12v swag. He pointed me to the Blue Seas ML-acr relay. Looks like a fine unit. I may get jiggy with this while on shift this weekend. Run wires and such, then order some new bats.

 

Jesus,.. i looked at the off grid kit for a good while, and DID NOT even notice that. Derp.... lol. Well, that gives me a smile. I wanna do exactly that, just not pay a grand for it..... Good stuff, good eye mate.

 

Yeah it won't be a permanent mount. It will most likely be some folding panel that will give the batteries some juice while parked for a few days. The DC to DC charger does everything the other relays do and still allow you to hook up solar since the solar controller is built in. I just feel it's a more versatile system than the relay only. Of course none of this stuff is cheap in price.

 

newb here... midlife crisis has brought me to t4r and offroading

the easiest way to do this would be to charge a second 12v battery using a charger plugged into the 120 volt outlet. No?

In reading about amps and watts, it appears that chargers use too high amps, and the system would shut down. Does that seem right?


also, if the 400 watts (maximum amps) is only an option when in idle, that means exhaust becomes an issue?
or significant charging should only happen when driving??

any thoughts?
