Leaking sunroof and under the dash.

Hi everyone! I have been experiencing leaks on my 2012 4Runner Trail from sunroof that drips on the upper controls where the map light is located and also under dashboard both same time when it rains and washing. I checked the sunroof and saw this small hole on the driver’s side and cleaned it and still leaks. As of now it’s been raing here in Northern New Jersey for days and everytime I have to put a rag just to minimized the leaking. More often happens when stationary and minimal when driving. Any experience like this and solutions? Thanks!

 

Look at the rubber molding , may have got deformed by heat or object.

 

All pollen and crap in ur drain tubes.. happened to me.. need an air hose to blow them out.. all shit over the yrs clogs the drains... mine were so bad I had to get them replaced... live on LI

 

Thanks guys! I have checked the moldings on all sides of the roof glass it seems to be ok and straight. I tried to snake it by a weedwacker line and then blow it off on the drain hole of a Compressed air spray can from a office supplies and hosed it down a bit, it seems the left side slower to drain than the right side so I did a 2nd try...so far it rained yesterday and no leaks but a little damp as I insert my fingers on the gaps between the sunroof mechanism and the interior liner. Also no visible water that drips on the floor on bithe driver and passenger side. But, still wonder if the seal of the sunroof is intact why it gets water and where is it coming from outside?

 

Compressed air from a can isnt strong enough... u need an airhose

 

I have a portable air compressor they called “Pancake Type” that I use for my nailers when I do carpentry, it has up to 125 Psi but can be adjusted lower. I can connect an air duster to that but the only thing I am afraid of is damaging the drain hose.

 

When I did mine I set it to about 95 and it was fine

 

If all else fails maybe your moon roof is not closing all the way, or maybe you just need new molding because it’s compressed and doesn’t make a tight seal.

 

Tried to blow it by air compressor to 95psi then poured water into where drains located, water went well the drain so far. I saw the water coming down outside underside beneath the step board. Water drains fast right out I poured water in. I hope it solves the issue! I just have to see when it rains and when I’m washing. If the issue still occurs then maybe the seals on the roof. But keeping my fingers crossed for that! Thanks much for the help! This gives me a peace of mind for now!

 

yes the sunroof leak is the drain tubes...on the roof seals use silicone spray .. made for rubber/paint/plastics .. spray a cloth and wipe it on the seals that will protect for damage..

 

Ok it rained today for almost an inch and checked it, it’s dry! Thanks for the tips and ideas everyone!

 

One other thing that has helped. Mine leaked bad and I blew out the drains and thought it was fixed, wrong. Just because you blow air through them doesn't mean they are full open. Get a piece of square weed eater line and push it through about 3 feet or as far as they will go, and really work it. I thought they drained behind the rear tire but mine drain by the a pilar. Is this normal? So far so good and it has been raining a LOT up here in Northern California.

 

I don't understand how cleaning the drain lines stops the leaking? If it leaks, the seal is bad, no?

 

Apparently a bit of a leak on a sunroof isn't the most uncommon thing most of us that have it would never notice it if the drains were working properly. Water "pouring" in yes, a very slight leak not so much.

 

You might need to get a rubber hose and fitting the size of the drain hole and blow through them to clear all the debris. I had a Volvo that made me red in face from trying to clean out the lines.
Eventually it all came free. Left in there long enough and you get compost coming out the lines.

 

Not true, gravity moves the water out the holes. Why do do think floods happen?

 

Person's talking about water not even getting past the seals to begin with. Unfortunately it does.

 

Are you a politician by chance? Read the message again. The OP said that they "cleaned" one line out. There are two, one on each side.
