New 4 Runner Limited Owner Here Needs Help / Has Questions

Hi everyone! This is my first time here, first post and, well my first 4Runner. I purchased a Limited. I wish to have some modifications done to it, namely a lift / level kit as I traded my Tundra Platinum Crewmax, I miss the slightly higher stance and wish to gain some of that back. I imagine that a 2.5 inch kit would do the trick, but what exactly do I want? Furthermore I am changing the wheels and tires. I found a nice set of 22's and a few 20's, however I am having the most difficult time finding decent mud terrain or trail terrain tires for it. Can anyone help direct me somewhere by providing a link in your reply? I would greatly appreciate it.

Also is there a benefit to going into an 18" wheel instead of a stock 20" or 22"?

Are you planning to go off road at all, or is the lift for aesthetic? That will dictate the kind of money to spend. Also, with a Limited trim your lift options can be "limited" (ha) because of your shocks. The factory shocks are hydraulically linked with a system called XREAS that enables flatter cornering at speed. Depending on what lift you install, you may need to eliminate the XREAS system entirely.

If you are changing tires AND wheels, consider sizing down to 17" instead of big wheels. There are a lot more choices for tires. Here is the six shooter by FN wheels in 17x8, zero offset. E-load KO2 tires in 275/70R17 (about a half inch taller and wider than stock).

So no, I do not plan to do any off roading whatsoever. What this is really for would be to bring the ride height up to get it a bit closer to my '16 Tundra Platinum Crewmax that I am trading in. I would never get rid of the truck as I bought it outright and dumped $12k in customization upgrades into it, but it has a 38 gallon tank and here in NY costs $125.00 a week to fill each week. I just can't justify that expense anymore for a daily driver that I never used the customized bed but maybe two times for. To boot, the insurance on the Tundra is $95.00 per month more than the 4Runner. So for just a daily driver and to get to and from gigs and have enough room to transport my gear (I'm a musician) this is perfect.

But yeah, the first thing I noticed was the ride height on the test drive and was just like "Oh God this is going in reverse compared to the Tundra. The second was loss of power compared to the 5.7 V8. You put that Tundra in Tow Mode and with the Corsa Sport Exhaust that thing screamed. But I have to put it past me and I'll be happy with the money in my pocket I save every month.

I also like the larger wheels too. I feel that with the right lift compatible with an XREAS system that doesn't have to be removed and the larger 20" or even on The Tire Rack I see an option for 22" wheels for, this would put me where I want to be. The more I investigate the more I start to see out there. I just don't know which is the right product and why. The systems I see compatible with XREAS are these two photos I uploaded here. But since I am not mechanically inclined I don't know the advantages one has over the other. I don't want to go removing things on a new vehicle like the XREAS system until the warranty expires at which time if I don't upgrade to a newer 4Runner I will then do a full coil over system and pull the XREAS. Replacing wheels and tires though I am good with that.

 

I have decided to with 17" Wheels. 3 inch spacer lift. Which of the above two are better? Also, How large of a mud or Trail Terrain tire can I go without any rubbing or any further modifications?

Hang on. This won't go offroad at all but you are selecting mud terrains for it? Spacer lifts are cheap but come with the trade-off of consuming the overall suspension stroke, so it stiffens the ride quite a bit. Fine for street riding though.

I'm worried that you bought this thing for better gas mileage- with a 3" puck lift and mud terrains you're going to be seeing comparable mileage to your Tundra.

 

Lol! Yeah man. The Tundra only gets 10 to the gallon. As for the Mud Terrain tires, I was going to go with Toyo Open Country M/T's 265/70R 17's. Yes, with the lift and the change there will it take away from the 18/20 in the 4Runner yes it will, but not THAT drastic. I've been told 2-3 MPG loss. I'm ok with that. Still coming out on top and ahead of the game here.

I'm not even sure the puck lift will be three inches. Definitely 2-2.5 with 3 being the option.

Yeah I like the look of the lift with Mudders even as a daily driver. Just me I guess.

 

With your driving style I think you're going to see about 12-14 for real world mileage.
