1999 (approx 220k miles) windshield wipers work only on HI. Will not operate on LOW or INT. Also, arms will not return to rest. They stop wherever they happen to be when switched off.

Is this a switch issue or a motor issue? I assumed switch since the wipers do run on HI. But a friend told me that the fact that they won't return to rest when switched off makes him think that it is the motor.

Figured that the experts could tell me. Switch is ~$130 at Rock Auto. I didn't want to go to the trouble and expense of switch replacement if it is a motor issue.

    Thanks in advance.

In my experience, when wipers won't park /rest position. But neither are common failures on Toyota's, if recommend getting it checked.

Also, the Hi speed setting may be a default when a motor fails so you have something instead of driving blindly, kinda how a blower resister when it goes bad the fan defaults to high speed
