2020 4Runner feels like it’s going to stall in AWD

I bought a 2020 4Runner Orp 5months ago. It was a rental car before I purchased it. When I put it into H4 sometimes it feels like it’s going to stall. It’s gotten better since I’ve used it more but sometimes at lower speeds (around 10 - 15mph) it wants to jerk and has a similar feeling as a stall.

I feel like it’s because the vehicle was a rental and most likely the H4 was rarely used.

What can I do to mitigate this situation? Should I use H4 drive often to “break it in” or is there a different problem here?

I want to add a lift kit and I’m very new too 4Runners and modifications in general. I will be doing a separate post on this but I want to make sure the vehicle is or will be in sound condition before I lift it.

    Thank You!

You don’t have AWD and are experiencing driveline bind in part time 4wd. Only the Limited has full time 4wd if equipped.

    I’m sorry I meant H4.

Search up driveline bind as to why you feel what you feel when turning on high traction surfaces. It’s putting a lot of stress on the transfer case.

Thank you sir! Is there a thread you recommend for a complete lift kit system including but not limited to UCL,LCL. I’m a beginner and I’ve enjoyed my 4Runner thus far. I want to mod it but in a way that I can maintain longevity to a certain degree.

    Thank You again!

I guess what's being asked is have you had a vehicle with part time 4wd previously, and if you understand under what road conditions you can use 4H and/or 4L on this 4R...using 4H (or 4L for that matter) under the wrong conditions will cause driveability issues that could be misconstrued as something wrong with the engine, when it's really the drive line...as a "beginner", you should be clear on how that all works before throwing a lift on it. These are very capable off road vehicles completely stock. You'll hear a lot of advice about trying it out as is and learnIng its limitations before making modifications that can alter the way a 4Runner drives and performs, both on and off road.

Too many to list & Worth every penny!
We definitely need more info from the OP here.

What conditions is he placing the T4R in 4H?

On dry roads, turning or going straight and not placing the system in a bind or in loose dirt ?

I’ve been using it on local roads in dry conditions. I’ve noticed the issue mentioned while turning in these conditions. It seems I’ve been binding the system.

Thank you all for your responses!

Good rule of thumb is “If you can see the road …keep it in 2 HI”. The exception is on occasion because it hasn’t been used in awhile…. I like to find a straight road under 45MPH and put it into 4 Hi just to keep things in good working order and I only do it for a few minutes at a time.

    Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....

    Yeah, stop doing that!

Focus on driving the thing and learning correct operation before worrying about mods.... Grab the owners manual and read that sumbitch front to back to start.

Or alternatively it had the shit beaten out of it. Have you ever heard the term "drive it like it's a rental"?

It’s a bit ironic, the reason I’d hate to buy a rental with part time 4wd is to avoid a car that’s been run in 4wd on dry pavement by people that just want to see what the 4wd button does.

But I’m glad the OP has figured this part out early by asking! I’ve done worse already knowing full well that 4wd will bind on dry pavement.
