lmao. 5,000 mile oil changes is absolutely not foolish. Go on youtube and watch the engine teardowns of 10k mile changes - maybe that will change your mind. The 10k oil change interval is for people who drive 200 miles a day on the highway.

People can get away with long change intervals because 4Runners are built so well and most of the kinks/problem areas are worked out (except for the new 6th gens).

At the same time, doing preventive maintenance and keeping fluids on the fresher side is NEVER a bad thing. They do break down over time due to heat, moisture, etc. depending on the fluid type. People can bitch about wasting money, but penny wise, pound foolish. Simple changes can reduce or help avoid larger repair bills.

Fluids are the lifeblood of your engine and its supporting systems. There's no such thing as a "lifetime" fluid.

This could have been my post... Same with self-maintenance, Excel spreadsheet, digital copies of receipts and photos of work in progress.

When I saw what my rear differential fluid looked like last weekend changing for the first time at 27,000 miles I cringe at the thought of people never changing it or going 100K+ miles between service. BTW, I used Redline gear oil as well.

My PS fluid is becoming noticeably darker approaching 30K and I will be swapping that next. I have a moisture meter I use, along with color, to monitor brake fluid.

I plan to keep this vehicle for as long as I can and would rather do these things than replace expensive hardware.

Thats awesome to know I am not the only one with OCD on maintenance. Iliterally did my rear diff last night. It had 26k miles and the fluid looked great. I am impressed with redline products. I am old school with my log though. Nothing is digital. I photocopy all receipts and make an entry into the log. Service, date, what product i used and where the service was performed. If i swap out a bolt or do anything, i log it log.jpg

How many people do you think actually change all these fluids? Not many and their vehicles run just fine. I’m sure that power steering failure was due to a defect and not because of old fluid.

What did your diff fluid look like? I changed mine recently at around 119K miles and it looked about the same as the new oil going in. If yours looked bad you either got water in your housing or it’s BS.

tell me you've changed it in between 119k miles? Then again, you not changing brake fluid until 200k, I wouldnt be surprised if you didnt.

Of course I didn’t change it before then. Why would I waste time and money on something completely unnecessary?

Your efforts to keep records of all maintenance activities will be rewarded if you ever decide to sell your T4R. I would happily pay top dollar for an unmolested 4Runner with complete and accurate maintenance records.

    Doesn't need any
Synthetic oil does not break down like organic oil
Moisture is not a problem as long as you run the engine long enough to get the oil to normal operating temperature. Moisture will continue to evaporate after the engine is shut down.

Thank you. Yeah, when I do sell it, I want the next person to know how much love I put into it. It’s never seen a car wash either. It’s hand washed 2x a week. Interior is done weekly. The wife and I have fun with it. We off road a lot and do road trips. It’s a 22 with almost 80k miles on it.

So how did you just change the diff fluid at 119k but also just changed the brake fluid at 200k. And you say other peoples posts are BS

It’s two different vehicles. The 4Runner has 120k miles and the Tacoma has 200K miles and I have not changed the brake fluid on it yet. Maybe this spring. 200K with minimal maintenance and still runs great. What more can you ask for?

So true. You dont know how many times I have been in a discussion on this forum about 10k oil changes. Ive seen Toyota youtube videos of engine teardowns of 10k mile oil changes and its not pretty. I always change it at 5k, diffs 20k, trans 60k, coolant 50k, power steering 30k brake fluid 30k. I just had a new diff put in under warranty for that TSB - If I would of had to pay for it, 5k. Major parts arent cheap - fluid is

How much longer do you think your vehicle will run compared to someone doing longer oil change intervals?

How often do you change your oil? Your question is stupid, it is literally stupid. I change my oil according to my driving habits/conditions which is 5,000 miles. I honestly could care less how you neglect your car. Seriously. Its like you are bragging about how you neglect your car. Thats what is so funny about your posts.

The question isn’t stupid. You just don’t want to hear the answer which is no difference in vehicle life. The oil in my Tacoma gets changed at 5K and the 4Runner around 7.5K, sometimes longer. Neither vehicles are neglected. They are mechanically perfect.
