I've been not posting pics on this thread because it's clearly titled "5th gen 4Rs".

Can I get an opinion on if my GX qualifies for future submissions? It's a 5th gen Ltd, basically....

Without this thread... I have nothing LOL... I was a big contributor when I had a real 5th gen...

POV - Here is one of the reasons why I enjoy running desert-like conditions. Mild to deep corregations (washboard), short hillclimbs with moderate breakovers that you feel a need to jump (but don’t cause you don’t have long travel), ever mindful that in deep sand the bow wake forming on the leading side of your tires could rip that steering to full lock…and stretches of rocky track bed that makes you wonder if you’ll pop a (or more) tire…oh the fun of it!

What part of Arizona? We will be in Tuscon in May. Looking for a place for my daughter to live. Any recommendations for a safe area close to University of Arizona?

The trail was south of Superior and worked back towards Florence Junction.
I'm not well versed in Tucson. Do you mean safe for your daughter? If a Tucson member doesn't chime in I'll check through my acquaintances. I'm sure I know somebody with Tucson knowledge, but just can't think of who at the moment.

Yes, safe for my daughter to live so I don't have to fly out, snuff a guy out, bury the body in the desert and fly home.

I can ask my friend for area recommendations. She lives just outside of Tucson and works in Tucson so she knows the area. Her daughter is an undergrad at U of AZ.

It came down to North Carolina and Arizona, we could have purchased a 2000 sq. ft , 3 bedroom house in Raleigh for around $185k, I have found the housing prices in the Tuscon area to be slightly more than that, so it looks like she's renting.

I know it's not built for that, but damn it works well at high speeds too...
Some folks were telling me that it is possible to throw 5th in 4lo, I didn't believe... until yesterday:

That’s a cool shot! That flag does not lie, you were definitely ripping across the dessert! Makes it look like an RC car. Or a tiny waterbug skittering across a pond lol.

Regarding 5th gear in 4lo, I’ve only been able to get up to 4th gear. If I recall correctly it will indicate 5th gear in S mode, but it stays in 4th. At least the stateside 4runners do. I think I remember you posted pics from Oman? Maybe it’s different in different markets?

Last trail of my vacation in arizona last week was Apache Trail which is part of the Tonto Natl Forest, super clean, super easy to do. About 40 miles, half of it is paved because it goes to the top of the Roosevelt Dam (Lake Area), super beautiful up there. Highly recommend this one as an easy and peaceful trail. No bouncing around, just easy all the way thru.

Some of the shots for the day were:
Entrance at Apache Trail.jpgThis is at the entrance - at the bottom of the hill - elevation about 1700ft.

Entrance at Fish Creek Part.jpgThis one at the entrace of Fish Creek Hill - it appears that during wet seasons this might be closed as the bottom part is full of water.
Bottom of the Moutain - Closed when full of water.jpgAt the bottom of fish creek hill. Bridge one way only. It was dry this week, no water at all. Roosevelt Dam.jpg This one getting closer to the top of Roosevelt Lake, the Dam in the back. The roads and areas so well taken care of, thank you arizona!
Topside of Roosevelt Damn.jpgon the other side of the dam. Super nice day - it took about 3hrs to get thru, took my time. Oh, I forgot, nice little restaurant at the bottom too, Tortilla Flat est 1904 - I had tacos there.
Roosevelt Lake-3785-X5.jpgThis one I wish I could take credit for but was shared by a friend of mine - just showing both sides of the dam.
Anyway, time in Arizona was good last week - time to go back to Houston - there will be new mods coming up to the rig. Stay tuned! Be safe out there everyone.

Just got back this past week from 3 weeks in Utah. Hit the San Rafael Swell area for a day, and then spent a week in Hurricane at the Matt's Offroad Games, and then another week in Moab (after all...it's right along the way from Michigan). Here are a few highlight photos. There are more in the "Matt's" thread in the General forum.

    Lunch break!

Good timing for you. That road had a massive washout in 2019 and has only been re-opened for a short while after the state dumped about $40 million into it.

    https://azdot.gov/projects/southeast-district-projects/state-route-88-apache-trail

Roosevelt is a very cool old dam with great history.
I'm glad to hear Tortilla Flats is still open. It has burned up 4 or 5 times over the years and every time we wonder if it will survive to re-open.

Just yesterday our wheeling group discussed the idea of running it sometime soon before it gets too hot.

I certainly enjoyed every bit of it. It was so peaceful and crisp, quiet, super nice. I will definitely do it again when I am back.

It's called S-Tree Campground. The state is upgrading the place and it is a 1st rate, remodeled, primitive campground. Vault toilets and no water. There are a couple of double sites. Bring your own firewood or a saw. 2 of the loops are still under construction. Our fire pit still had paint on it and it is a drive to get there.
