    Good morning everyone,

    I bought a 5 speed 3.4 L 1998 4x4 with a rear locker 4Runner (215,xxx miles).

I have a P0500 code showing as a check engine light. This comes up as Vehicle Speed Sensor A.

I’ve also had my ABS light come on my dash twice. I have not been able to pull the ABS code because it turns off when I turned my vehicle off and back on. The ABS light has only briefly turned on twice in the past 6 months.

I’ve heard these vehicles use ABS sensors for their VSS but I am not clear on this. I’m also not sure if I should replace the front, rear, or both. My speedometer and odometer work perfectly to my knowledge. I believe this is an intermittent problem possibly due to a bad ABS sensor.

Does anyone have any advice for me on this issue? I appreciate your help in advanced!!

    thank you,
    Mike.

"I installed a used ABS ecu at the passenger kick panel and the P0500 cleared instantly and my odometer is now working.
If you have this OBD-II code, open up your ABS ecu and look for melted capacitors." Might be worth a look?

You can pull the sensors and check them for the correct resistance to see if they are good.
