What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

If I didn’t plan on keeping it forever I wouldn’t care about using it as a commuter.
Besides, my wife is getting a Lexus RX so I’ll be using her hybrid Elantra for commutes. I’d rather put “useless” miles on that than the 4R. Also the savings on gas (60 vs 18 mpg) means more goodies I can buy for the 4R.


PS: don’t get me wrong, I’ll definitely grab the 4R once in a while to run errands even though I can take something else but I would have withdrawals if I didn’t drive it at all for more than a week

 

One of the German-made Osram H9 bulbs I installed two years ago had burned out after 20k miles. Modified another one from Walmart for installation:

And my daily driver sedan died today. Transmission went out. I don’t want to deal with the repairs. RIP Nissan Altima, 2013-2025, 206k miles.

So the new 4R is now my daily driver.

 

By far one of the most in depths threads I’ve ever seen…remember the 1st time I saw it for reference n thought “where was THIS GUY when they made the 5th gen’s…”

I recently just replaced my h9 mod with the the silverseries? cause it was the o my one’s available {Like one above what @3JOH22A bought(baseline)} n maybe it’s a bit brighterish?

I’ve rocked the no rear bumper on a couple occasions (not a spare tire too though). My wife was horrified to drive it. I kinda liked it. Reminds me a bit of the 1st/2nd gen runners you see with no rear “bumper”.

I feel for you tho, that’s gotta be gutting.

 

After the fact, I was in my office when it all went down. Witnessed it afterwards via surveillance camera and it made me sad.

Should have my normal tire back on tomorrow after it gets patched. It doesn't look horrible with no bumper, gonna see if I can find a body shop that will swing high clearance bumper. Ironically, I do have a Barcelona Red bumper cover in my side yard that I was going to use for a high clearance bumper anyway. Hopefully that helps with getting a high clearance bumper lol.

 

On my way out of town for the weekend I had my new favorite shop Apex Overland install my RCI steel gas tank skid. I know, I know, no picture but it did actually happen.

 

I actually prefer the H9 mod to the OEM LED's. Kinda by a lot.

 

Made it to Marks Work Wearhouse in the runner just before closing w/ a $100 GC towards original straight Levi’s and a dope Helly Hansen sweater.

Now stopped to buy the wife’s cake mix for my son’s 4th bday party tmro!

I thought about the Highlander. They turboed that one up as well and it didn't have the internal cargo capacity. I could barely get a full-sized mattress in the 4Runner... That is resolved with the Sienna.

I frequently think about the engine change. Every time I drive by a dealership, the major model lines on the lots are the trucks, the 4Runner and that BRXYZ4 EV thing. They're sitting so long that dealers are discounting. The reputation is soiled... (Or is it that people no longer want to spend $60 or $70,000 on a car anymore?)

Dang screw in the tire hit the side wall, unfortunately the AT3W's are no longer being made. So I guess forced tire upgrade.

 

All new wipers.

 

Took the 4Runner off the grid permanently. Picked up some FN(x) TRD Pro style wheels in 17x8.

Cleaned interior and exterior, finished off with a ceramic sealant.

 

I would take the turbo over driving a minivan any day.

Finally washed the 4R from the snow last week. Focused on underneath and interior, quick exterior.

Also trimmed some plastic off the radiator protector? The OEM skid has been taken off but hadn't noticed the trim hanging down. I think I'm going to look for black skids in the future.

 

RCI Sliders finally installed and ARC Front fender liners. Highly recommend both!! Next week suspension.

 

I feel your pain. I had 1 Falken AT3 that kept getting a nail/screw/you name it. DT fixed it 3 times but said that was the limit. So, of course, it gets another screw in it. Now the proud owner of a set of AT4s...
