There's a benefit from being a stinking old man at age 71+. Hard to tell what the stink emanates from! So far I haven't gotten busted, but I know the day is coming!

Retiring the 4R as a daily driver.

It always bothered me putting ~35 miles everyday on the 4R to commute for work. That's almost 10k miles per year.
While I dont mind putting thousands of miles for road trips, going to the lake, skiing, or even for no real reasons (storm outside, lets go have fun in the mud), I always felt that I was "wasting" the 4R for work commutes. If I planned on keeping it for a few years then get something else then I wouldn't care but I am never selling the 4R, no matter what other vehicle I'll be getting in the future. So I need it to last for at least 40 more years...
Not using it to commute to work is going to help not put useless miles on it.

I used to do this with one of my cars. In RI, my city didn't bother too much about it, but a couple of the surrounding cities would. Eventually, I stuck the plate behind an opening in the front valance so the numbers were still visible. Technically not properly mounted, but the cops didn't bother me afterwards.

Too poor to buy anything now
I've been thinking along the same thoughts. I might pick up a gently used economy car for errands and just use the 4R for fun or towing.

Same. So I have a sedan as a daily driver. It’s 11 years old with 206k miles. I had another one prior to that but sold it as it had a lot of miles too.

My 1999 4R has 248k miles. It would probably be dead by now if I used it as a daily driver.

If I wasn't at work, on the clock and in uniform.

Bumper pulled off, appointment with Discount tomorrow to get the tire patched. Gonna be running the no rear bumper look for awhile I guess.

Used it to go to Shady Maple Smorgasbord & then groceries. My wife says the produce & meats are a lot less$ then at the Giant we use. This was 32mi 1 way. Run by Mennonite's I believe.

2014 Neglected by the previous owners 2020 is an abused former rental... 2023 New I've been buying above my pay grade ☹️
Mine is more a " what I'm not doing with my car today" post.

I had an accident 3 weeks ago where an earth mover decided to stop a little late and it pushed me into and started a four-car pileup.

My insurance has finally totaled it. The collision center already knew it was totaled, the value of the vehicle requires multiple stages of approval to total it.

I have not been given an official payoff number yet, but I know that it will be more than what I paid for the car. That is because that last level of approval is for levels of $50,000 or more.

Because of the design change in recent 4Runner models and the condition of used ones that are for sale all have horrible service records, I will not be getting another 4Runner.

This is my third 4Runner in 4 years. The first 4Runner was bought used during the pandemic and the dealership didn't have the title to it.

The second one was a certified used vehicle from a Toyota dealership, also during the pandemic. That one had an inspection that was complete fiction. Numerous things on the inspection form were BS when problems were discovered (days after I took it home), I would take it in for service the problem wouldn't get solved and, the last time I took it in, before the one year at warranty expired, they finally admitted that everything I was complaining about was verifiable and they bought the car back from me at full pop. That includes my registration renewal that I paid.

I bought this one new in July and it was even discounted while other dealerships were still charging a $5,000 market adjustment. I saved about $7,000 over the other dealerships in Southern California.

I joked that maybe God doesn't want me in a 4Runner. The first two times were gentle nudges, God is now using a firmer hand to tell me to move on.

Now, I have all weather floor mats, all weather cargo tray, carpeted floor mats and a cargo cover all for sale. I am in Carlsbad, California. I even have a 5th generation hood in the silver metallic with no scoop.

I still have a great deal of knowledge about the 4Runner, especially the 5th generation, as I've done incredible levels of research and even have schematics and a soft copy of the repair manual. I heavily got into parasitic draw issues with my 2020. I will still get notifications of threads that I follow and I may still participate.

I made my dash cam mount and it was very effective. It even caught the guy in the Kenworth truck behind me looking at his cell phone moments before he used me as his braking system...

I used the regular ribbed push-in mounting tab for the headliner. After the impact busted things like my cell phone holder and caused all sorts of my stuff to fly around in the vehicle, this thing remained perfectly straight...

The plastic was from an arts and crafts store. A small picture frame with a non-reflective mylar "glass" in it. I think I spent $0.75 on it in the clearance bin.

I added some hooks from some velcro just to give it a little tension. I ran the wire out out from between the rubber door gasket and the headliner, I did not cut it and it tucked away nicely. I did have to use the Viofo 8m camera cable and routed it down the side and under the door sill covers, ultimately going up the a-pillar on the driver side tucked under the headliner and resurfacing behind the mirror.

My 24 Pro with 8800mi might be coming up for sale soon. Wife wants a bigger vehicle for the dogs. Trunk interior molle, diode dynamics SS3 Pros - other than that, she's stock.

You will probably get more than what you paid for it if you are in a big market. There are a lot of trucks and 4Runners that are sitting on lots because of that new engine and transmission.

Too rich for my budget :)

My replacement is going to be $47k out-the-door... A 25 Sienna LE with minimal options (mostly a built-to-order car, thanks to a creative Toyota salesman) The Sienna will also give a little more passenger and cargo capacity which will be good to hand down once I start having grandchildren. The lower entry point will also be good for me and my passengers.

I'll do the break-in oil change at 700-1000 miles with a pre-filled oil filter, 5k oil changes and only use TopTier™ gasoline and OEM parts. Can you say OCD? :D:D:D

    Hahaha.

It would have been a new 4Runner if they didn't turbo them up. :(

I can get over shiny black plastic wheel flare things, not unproven turbos. Sad... My neighbor has of those new turbo engines and their accompanying transmissions. One of them is in the shop and he's had a rental now for 3 weeks.

It was and I told you so moment as I questioned him before he got rid of his 21 4Runner and his 19 Tundra. He likes to show off that he has money, he also showed off he had no common sense.

While it's been cited that the 2.4T has been used in many vehicles since 2021(?) like the NX and later the Highlander, it shares around half parts content between transverse and longitudinal applications. (To the best of my current knowledge)

The true test is probably how it shapes up in several years but so far, I'm personally not worried about the 2.4T in the 4Runner and would complain about other decisions made.

Not to mention turbos have been around a long while and there are junk N/A engines too. I wouldn't mind the GM 2.7T from what I can tell, but their 1.2T I would not buy due to the wet oil pump belt buried in there.
