The Apple computer behind the dash, just to the left of the big fuse box.

Its not a mouse - I'm going with light power. If the lights are not there, there's likely a plug or dangling wires somewhere this connects to.
I did the same thing as someone else with a Google image search and found this one - also a "cars from japan" link -

I'm starting to think jjj stuck that to his dash, snapped a picture and posted it here to mess with us, he hasn't been back since he posed the question.

From the dealer, the salesman wasn't sure what it was either but forgot to look into further at the time of purchase. OEM 3 Button key fob.

Sorry, trying to figure out how to navigate this site as well. No it's not a button but when the car starts the play looking button turns orange. Haven't figured out what it is yet. I'll probably email the dealer because they are pretty far from me and see if they know anything. The original salesmen didn't know what it was.

Ask him to call prior owner to find out. There’s a bunch of us who want to know. :p

Those damn 4Runner owners always working on some aftermarket modifications. People can’t buy a pre-loved 4Runner with confidence anymore.

Ya, mine is the bottom thing and it lights up just like that when the car starts. Thanks for the info. Weird that all these results are pictures from cars in other countries that have this thing.

Just an fyi update, I contacted the dealer and they said most likely it's an aftermarket alarm system. They said 99% sure it was. I don't know what the difference is from OEM because the key fob is the OEM one and it opens and closes like OEM.

That radio bezel is easy to remove - you should see if you can tell where the wires go and maybe just remove it.
My money is still on lights, not an alarm.

Just pull your dash apart, the thing is like Lego … just be gentle with the clips. Lots of vid on YouTube, and I’ve pulled mine apart twice so far for the centre.

If that thing was in my vehicles I would be taking the whole dash apart just to figure out what that was for. It would drive me crazy not knowing. Especially since that area of the dash comes apart pretty easily.
