Since I got the 4runner I have been contemplating on doing a plate and swing out on the rear but didn’t want to spend that much money yet (college student). So after searching around I found that Curt made a mount that goes into your factory hitch and allows you to mount your spare. However with that I wasn’t able to open my hatch unless I removed the hitch and tire. That led me to finding the Masterbuilt folding hitch.

I cut off the L on the Curt hitch to allow it to fit into the Masterbuilt and that allowed me to fold the tire carrier up and down. Then after that it was just a couple bolts to mount the tire and I had a tire carrier for under 150

What size bolts did you use to mount your spare tire to the hitch. I'm thinking about getting that hitch myself.

If you had a 33" spare or larger, I'd understand.

What's the purpose of the hitch tire carrier? You can fit a 32" tire underneath already.

Added crash protection and gives tailgaters something to look at?

Seriously, the way I read his post, it was a want to do, not a need to do.
