For that money, I would do as you say - let it seep and clean it now and then.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
My process for leaks is-clean off by soaking with degreaser then spray off clean. Monitor next few months, note the rate. Few drops a week, or heck day, not getting fixed unless it's easy-oil pan, trans pan, etc.

No way I would spend any money on fixing it because it doesn't impede the use of the vehicle in any way other than dripping a little. Put a piece of carpet under your 4Runner and rotate it every month to see how much it drips.

Will do thanks for your advice any suggestions on degreaser? Some oil on the alternator as we’ll wondering if should use degreaser on that as well or is that a no no?

A small amount of oil can make what appears to be a big mess.
Have you ever spilled a quart of oil?

I doubt your oil level would show a significant decrease in 10,000 miles

$4000 is the going rate for the timing cover leak repair at the dealership. It is a very time consuming job taking upto 20 labor hours.

Be careful getting it done from an independent garage. Many a times more leaks start.
If it's not bad enough where it is dripping on the floor and not losing excessive oil between changes , let it be.

This is a common problem with the 1GR V6 in 4th gens, and less common with the revised 1GR V6 in 5th gens. Timing cover seal is a big job as Lc200 says; the mechanic may choose to pull the engine and do the work on a stand. Clean up the oil with degreaser and monitor. See if you can pinpoint the origin of the leak. Once you do, goop some sealant over the area from the outside.

"Gooping sealant" over a leak does nothing but make a big ugly mess. You can't stop a leak from the outside.

Just pulled up our warranty plan papers and we have platinum… I had forgotten what plan we got and just trusted them when they said I wasn’t covered. My plan is covered up to 100k miles those jerks really said I wasn’t covered.

What do you think is keeping the oil inside the timing cover? There's no rubber gasket.

Multiple 2nd gen Tacoma folks reported success with this method. You clean the area well, apply sealant, and wait for it to cure before running the engine.

$5,700?!? That's insane. Those timing covers are known to seep for eons before becoming a real problem. Like Borracho said, I'd keep cleaning it and keeping an eye on it. A quart of oil at $4 every 3k miles for years is still cheaper than $5.7k. And who knows if some ditzy teenager isn't going to rear end you at a red light and total it out before it gets to the point of needing full, true repair anyways.......

Do you really think you'll get much of that back when you move on to another vehicle? In fact it may decrease the value.

Spend $5700 remodeling the kitchen or bathroom of your house, assuming you
    own it.

If you don't own your home perhaps $5700 would make a part of a down payment.

Toyotas 1gr and 2 gr 6 cylinders are infamous for these leaks. Honestly, I’m not letting anyone disassemble my entire engine bay and put it back together. Especially if it’s a practically new car. A lot of people have this job done only to have it start seeping again shortly after. It’s a design flaw. I’d just let it seep and clean it every now and then. Having it repaired is no assurance that it won’t start again in a few thousand miles. If mine starts under 60k, I’ll gauge the severity and either ride it out or trade it in. But im not spending 40k on a truck that needs to have a periodic break down and rebuild or my engine bay every so often at 5-7k dollars a pop. There are people who have had this reoccur multiple times after having it repaired.

It’s more than that. Many people have it repaired to only have it return. If it’s bad and the truck is new, I’m living with it or ditching it. To be honest I feel like it’s a design flaw. I also think there are a lot of 4Runners Tacoma’s that have the deep and don’t even know it

It's not just the $10 crankshaft seal making it look like the cover is it? I have read about that.

A friend had a 3.5 taco and it looked like timing cover, but steering reservoir was low and what I suspected. He traded. Wasn't smart enough to drive a Toyota anyway.
