has a build date of 4/19, 5 years old. still works but don't want to be stranded out in the desert. in las vegas and batteries usually last 4 years in our heat. my 4runner is always garaged unless out exploring though. have had great success with toyota batteries. don't understand how toyota can make an 84 month lead acid battery but no one else can.

was thinking of getting a duracell agm to replace.

has anyone had an 84 month battery last that long?

I am with you. I’ve been off-roading in Utah and you can drive 25 miles in any direction and not see anything but sheep. I’d replace it.

My 2019 also running with original Panasonic battery. I have a emergency jump start battery pack. I'm thinking to wait till I see some hesitation in starting until I replace the battery.

I have a generic battery pack which works for years but this Noco one seems to be the fav around others.

4Runner alternator will not charge Duracell unless you make modifications to charging system.
Duracell AGM needs 13.8V-14.6V to charge and my scanguage II shows 13.3V-13.4V on regular driving.

When my 4Runner need a new battery I'm most likely buy a cheap Walmart battery.

The original battery in my 2013 lasted 9 years. With your use case, I probably wouldn't push it that far.

I also second keeping one of the booster packs in the I keep one under my seat, I've used it a few times to help myself or others and it's definitely come in clutch.

I have always replaced batteries after 4 years. They always seem to fail otherwise at the worst time and place. :nuclear:

My 2010 Corolla had an Interstate battery in it when I bought it in 2019. I had a glitch that was draining the battery and it went dead flat several times in Sub-Zero weather. I would charge the battery and have it checked at the local Advance Auto and it always checked out good. I finally replaced it this spring right before I traded it off. I've never seen a battery take that much abuse and keep on ticking.

Batteries will last a long time if they are cared for.

Don't discharge a lead acid, (LA), starting battery more than 50 %. Discharging further shortens life. Never store the battery in a discharged state. Usually not a problem w/ a starter battery, but heads up. Never allow a LA batt to discharge completely. (Thanks for auto shutoff headlights!) Heat is death to LA batts. Not only does it stress them electrically but they can lose electrolyte. Automotive batts must either contain an internal explosion or vent the products of combustion. Making an explosion proof case is $$$$ so batteries, whether "sealed" or open, vent. (They produce hydrogen while charging.) And that can lead to electrolyte loss. In the old days we added water, with today's batts that may not be possible. (I'm not talking about glass mat batts here because I never applied them. So I can't address them.)

I bought a '15 from Maryland that had a six year old OEM batt. I got 1 TX summer out of it and the heat killed it. I buy the cheapest starter batts I can get. Three years is avg life it seems. So the guarentee doesn't pay if buying a more expensive unit.

I don't doubt you could get 8 years out of a battery. Treat it right, manage the electrolyte and don't smoke, drink or run around with loose women...

I've seen many sets of high voltage switchgear with 20 year old lead acid cells...

Welp, after much use, and some abuse, my beautiful Panasonic battery is approaching its end. It’s cranking much slower than I like in the cold weather.

The OE Panasonic in our 2018 highlander is still going strong, but that one has had an easy life. The 4runner battery didn’t last as long in comparison, but it had to power the winch for several heavy pulls, and I also accidentally discharged the battery deader-than- dead last summer while I was doing work on my cargo platform. I topped the cells off with distilled water and recharged it, and has kept going till now. That deep discharge was probably what sealed its fate, so I can’t say I’m completely disappointed in the amount of time I got from it.

Has anybody ever been able to buy an actual Panasonic factory version of the battery? I’ve only seen dealers carry typical big box store batteries that are toyota branded. Probably not worth the expense to get a genuine Panasonic, but I’m a little curious.

Went down this rabbit hole recently after my OEM battery failed a couple months ago.
Decided against AGM since the factory charging system won't support it.

Duracell offers a sealed lead acid battery. No vents, no mess, no need to charge monthly like an AGM.
Made by East Penn Manufacturing. Very good battery and Sams sells them for a great price.
Much higher CCA than the OEM battery as well.
    upload_2025-1-24_12-32-20.png

After a ton of research this is what I decided on.

Us North American folks have pined for it for years, I read about someone cross-referencing with some Honda battery but no dice on that front that I can tell - your best bet is probably trying to get someone/something that possesses a new one to part with their battery or get flexible with property rights.

Shame though, I'd certainly shell out more for a factory battery. (but whether that'd be enough to be feasible, etc. is something else)

    Similar story.
I went with Walmart Everstart Maxx lead acid battery with 750CCA vs Duracell is 752CCA (I think). A big difference in cold starting compared to stock Panasonic battery at crazy low temps these days in Denver CO.

Nice. The Duracell is 725CCA so not quite as good as the Everstart... but I didn't want vents on my battery with all the off roading I do.
Needed to be sealed like the OEM was.

Edit: Correction the OEM panasonic may not be sealed but the Duracell I replaced it with is leak/ maintenance free

Thanks for the recommendation. Do you have a model or part number for the specific one you have. Asking just in case they have similar but different versions…

I’m pretty sure the factory Panasonic is not considered a sealed battery. At least based on the fact that each cell plug has teeny tiny vent holes at the bottom of the plug head. I only noticed them when I took them off to top off the cells with distilled water.

Regardless, I think it would be nice to replace it with a sealed unit.

My mistake. I thought OEM Panasonic was sealed since it didn't have the big vents/ covers on top and mine never leaked like my old o'reillys batteries would in my other cars.

    Thanks for the correction!

To tell you the truth, I’m not sure what defines a “sealed” battery. Can it actually be literally sealed?

That said, my experience is the same as yours. I haven’t had any leaking problems on mine despite going over fairly off-camber terrain on a regular basis.

There was no leaking even when I went out to the trails at Ouray last summer, where I was actually smelling gasoline from the gas tank due to the angles on some trails. But the battery itself never showed evidence of leaking.

I’f I had to guess, sealed refers to “not maintainable or maintainace free”. Because I’d imagine if there was a truly sealed battery, the case would have to be some sort of rated pressure vessel to keep it from cracking open. Not sure though, maybe hydrogen pressures aren’t extreme and it’s possible to contain them in a beefier plastic battery case? I’m sure somebody that knows will chime in.

I think the OE Panasonic doesn’t leak because those tiny vent holes are probably small enough that the surface tension of the acid doesn’t allow it to break through the vent holes…While hydrogen itself is easily and continually vented through them.

I thought the flat tops are "sealed" and maintenance/ leak free. I don't remember where I read that during my battery research. And I'm not sure if they even mean sealed in a literal sense. I'd assume not though... They have to have some sort of vent.

I was mainly worried about getting battery juice in my engine bay and having corrosion problems. Made by East Penn mfg and the extra 75 CCA was also a selling point.

I also had one in my wife's old corolla and the thing lasted 8 years :101010:

My 2010 Corolla had an interstate battery in it when I bought it. From the appearance, it had significant underhood time on it.

Through operator headspace it went dead flat several times in the winter, and I mean Canadian border winters. Every time I would charge the battery and go to AutoZone to have it checked and every time it would check out just fine. After I discovered what the cause was, no more dead batteries. That sold me on Interstate batteries. It usually only take a few total discharges in winter to destroy a battery. That sucker just would not die.
