Tailgate question

When my Runner is running, I can’t open the tailgate. Is there a setting to allow me to unlock/open it when it’s running? It’s weird that I have to shut it off.

 

Just unlock it with the inside button first.
All the doors can now be opened while it's running.

Edit: This safety/ security feature has slowly me trained be to unlock all doors if I exit the vehicle for any reason.

At first I hated not being able to use my fob while I'm outside the vehicle. Now I'll shift into park, roll my window down and unlock the doors before I exit the rig. This avoids the problem

 

By default, all the doors are locked when the truck is running. If you open the drivers side door, that door unlocks and stays unlocked, but the rest of the doors stay locked. All you have to do is hit the unlock button and then you can access the tailgate.

 

I don't know if my 2019 is set to standard default but when put in gear the doors lock and then when put in Park they unlock. But like others said unlock all the doors when you get out and you're good. My daughters 08 4runner locked her out once in 110 degree temps and car running. If you start it up and close the doors it auto locks. She did that outside the vehicle in a parking lot trying to give the car next to her room to back out. Roadside assistance was called to unlock it.

 

Not sure about 2019 but on mine I can change it in the settings. Either it locks when in P like you said, or locks after reaching a certain speed (can’t remember exactly but around 8-10 mph), or I think it can be disabled so it doesn’t lock automatically at all.
If you don’t have an option to change it in the car settings, it can probably be done with Carista as well. I have mine set on locking once it reached the target speed

So is it stuck? You can't open it all or just can't open it when the 4runner is running? What year 4runner? Assuming newer since you mention hatch arrow. Is it still under warranty?

 

IT WILL NOT OPEN IF YOU ARE NOT IN PARK
YOU MUST BE IN PARK
The only reason the back hatch wont open when the vehicle is running, is if the vehicle is not in park. If you are in reverse, neutral, or drive the rear hatch WILL NOT OPEN.
As soon as you put it in park the vehicle should auto-unlock and then you can open the rear hatch.

it’s a 24 and only when engine is running it would not open. Opens otherwise.

 

Engine was running and in park. I unlocked door at door and at hatch. It wouldn’t open.
