Hi, I hope I can get some help here - thanks in advance.
My 2001 SR5 4 runner has an issue when it's very cold outside (first time this has happened).

I start the truck and get the dash lit up with the red brake! light, and the amber ABS lights.
With these lit there is a canister above the steering column in the engine compartment - that shakes then stops and the relay box on the passenger side trips/clicks and so does the relay box in the rear. This goes on for a few minutes (3-5) then all the dash lights go off and all good.

Until today - I let the truck warm up for 2-3 mins then drove with the dash still lit up for about 10mins. Lights did not go off while driving - AND then the brakes failed.

At this point I was only going 5mph so pulled over and stopped. I let the truck sit for 15-20mins. Then started it up( dash still lit up when started) then after 3-4 mins lights went off - clicking relays done then the brakes worked fine.

Anyone have this happen or can you give advice on what to do next?
    Thanks for any help?

Sounds like the abs control module. Best would be to scan and check for codes to see if there is verification.

They went motorized in 2001 from the normal master cylinder setup and they are known to fail at times.

Do you know if the canister that shakes on this is supposed to or be firmly in place? Why would it need to shake back and forth?

Your ABS pump motor is going out and will completely fail very soon.

My 2001 started having the exact same symptoms you are experiencing a few weeks ago.
You could try and replace just the motor but I can guarantee the quality won't be as good as OEM or you could try to buy a used Actuator Assembly from EBay if you're on a budget ($700-1000).

I bit the bullet and bought the entire assembly new from Toyota as I never want to worry about it again and besides, the one in the truck (or potentially a used one) is 23-24 years old at this point and will have other failure points eventually.

The part number for the entire assembly is 47050-35010; I bought mine from Decatur Toyota in Alabama online as they were running a Free Shipping special and my total out the door was something like $1390.
I'm getting the unit installed at a local shop on Tuesday as I don't want to risk not bleeding it correctly.
