Hi everyone! I know this thread has been debated a lot and all of us have our own thoughts about the necessity of the first break-in oil changes. In this thread, I just want to know what was the mileage of your 4Runner when you do oil changes and its current mileages, and please share with us any problems you have a long the way if you have.

I just want to share my scary story. I brought my rig to blackstonetoyota ( in Fresno-CA ). I requested oil changes at 3000, I was willing to pay out of my pocket but they said “don’t worry, we’ll do it for you”. I was full of belief ( I have not have much experience with dealerships) I have brought my rig to them like 5 times in 2 years. Just yesterday, I checked the invoice of the first time I was there and they did not change oil, suck a pretentious business. So the first oil change was around 7000 miles.

I really don’t know how much difference the engine damage between 1000 miles oil change and 7000 miles oil changes for the first time, I want to keep it 20-30 years ( I don’t really like complicated high-tech ) until any new models from Toyota as reliable as this one . But I am going to do oil changes by myself, and if you guys in Central Valley, keep away from them. I do need some for your real experience to calm myself, that dealership just destroyed all of my intention in the first place.

Your truck will be fine. Toyota’s manual says 10K miles. I change mine around 7.5K miles.

5K miles and I’m at 85K. My Taco got the same and made it to 150K before being totaled. No need for an early change. In before it goes the way oil threads go.

If I could watch, I would be happy to let the dealer do it. But I can’t so I don’t.

I change my first round of oil sometime before 3k miles. Next change at 10k, then every 5k.

7500 miles b/c I drive mostly local stop & go.

1GR’s are not associated with premature wear or oil burning issues despite a wide variance of opinions on intervals. Just use the good stuff, and unless you’re pushing it really hard, pick any number under 10k and you’ll be fine.

Our 1st oil change was @ 5K miles; dealership, then every 5K at home, except for the last one at around 4K (was going on a long trip which would have put us over OUR preferred interval) 36,600 miles on it.

First is usually at a 1000 miles. Stuck to 10k oil changes for 150k miles, now I hover between every 7k to 8k due to higher mileage.

More than the miles, it's the duration and where/how you drive that matters.

At the very least, do 1 oil change every year even if you don't put enough miles on it.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Being retired we put so few miles on our 5th gen we currently go by time that has passed. It has had the 2 free dealer oil changes before 9k miles(now), dealer did at 3K and 6k, I did yesterday at 9k. It was originally intended to be the wife’s vehicle but due to heath reasons she doesn’t drive anymore. When alone, I usually use one of my other two vehicles and I pretty much only drive the 5th gen when she is with me. It is a mall crawling garage queen.
It has never even spent a single night outside in 2-1/2 yrs.
I love the raw simplicity of my 2nd gen and the deep rumble of the 3rd gen Cummins. The 5th gen is almost too ‘refined/insulated’ for me.

I did my first oil change at around 6000mi, and every 10k for a few years now i'm back on 6k changes and have a total of 100k.

Its good to do your first oil change early, but not as important as it used to be with the much more refined manufacturing process with less filings/particles.

I did my first oil change at 1,000 miles and have been doing them every 7-8K miles since. I have driven nearly 60K miles so far and no issues.

    Really, 3500 miles!! That's a tad overkill.
I would literally be changing oil every 2 months. Considering what a pain in the butt it is on the 4runner, that would make me very unhappy.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

I agree. That is over kill. I'm a firm believer of only changing my oil every 30k miles or until I hear a loud metal knocking from the engine, whichever comes first!

Haha! Yeah I have upgraded skids so doing the oil changes are very easy. The 4R is primarily just an off-road and camping rig so it sees mostly hard desert conditions and it tows my camping rig so I do it at 3,500 just for peace of mind that's all.

I did mine at about 600miles, oil analysis showed lots of metal. While unfortunate that early oil change was not done, it is not fatal. Just assume your car has extra 25K on the odometer, because that is probably equivalent wear from all that metal riding in the oil.

There’s nothing wrong with metal in the oil. That’s completely normal for a new engine breaking in. We have oil filters to catch any large particles for a reason.

The paranoia in these oil change threads is insane. I have a story about my first vehicle that will give you nightmares. It was an 86 Cherokee with the 2.8 V6. It leaked and burned oil so I just topped the oil off occasionally and hardly ever changed the oil. Maybe once a year and that was back in the days of conventional oil and 3000 mile oil changes. It was still running strong when I sold it and got a newer Cherokee.

OP you're going to be fine.

Just do what makes you feel better. Folks do 3k OCI's (did that on the ol' Sienna, probably overkill, exhaust rust and no longer being needed in the family killed it), 5k, 10k, whatever. If you're a highway star you could probably go even higher but that's a relative unknown.

All you're going to get from this thread is probably "data inconclusive".

I for one like Blackstone, but I probably won't find as much use for them today. I used them back when I was hoping for more insight into the health of a suspect Hyundai/Kia engine. Numbers!

Sure, you cannot "overmaintain" a vehicle but make sure to also cover the rest of the vehicle.
