Just Got me an 06 Tundra to go w/ my 5th Gen 4R

Allot of you won’t find this interesting but if you are anything like me…. You’ll understand why this is a HAPPPPY DAYY. For me. Ever since the guy that loaded 2 bails of straw just threw them in the back of my runner before I could half way wrap them. I’ve been on the search for an old reliable truck that I can throw straw, manure, dirt , etc… in the back with no worries. )I keep my 4Runner immaculate and I’m also allergic to straw… )

Long story short, I’ve admired this old truck for more than a year and finally convinced the guy to sell it to me. It’s RWD, Reg Cab and he has lifted it and put different some 265/65/17s on it. It has 171,000 miles and has never had the timing belt replaced (Just ordered

TKT-021 from Rock Auto) and will be doing this in the next couple weeks. I’m putting new white letter K02s on this AM right after get it tagged. Pictures will be forth coming!!!

I’m sure the 2UZ-FE fans understand my excitement. It’s been ages since I had a V8 and I look forward to trying to make this project truck become a million miler….

PS: Both previous owners say the same thing “ Have always made timely oil/ filter changes and have never had any problems with the truck.

 

One of my neighbors has an 06', maybe it's an 05? Anyway, the keeps it looking new and it has almost 300k miles on it. He tows & hauls things with it ALL the time.

 

My other vehicle is an 07 Tundra and it still gets worked fairly often, always nice to have options.

 

I would love to have a Tundra myself, but my garage ain’t big enough, and my wallet ain’t deep enough. Maybe one day…

Would love to find a limited 06’ 4wd doublecab in white

 

Well, we got 6 inches of snow so I couldn’t get it tagged but that didn’t stop me from fish tailing all the way to my tire guy where I promptly got stuck in his parking lot. Long story short, I have the new K02s on it and thank God I was able to have a Bobcat dump a load of snow in the back which made the ride home much better. I am going to give it a good cleaning before I provide pics. This will be an on going project… and I have to remember the tortoise wins the race…lol. At present, it was $6000 for the truck, $1300 for the tires, I bought 4 gallons of Toyota Super Long Life Antifreeze $120 and $191 for the ASIN Timing Belt Kit….. I bet before I get done I’ll easily have $12K invested. EBay has these priced around $16K. Which sounds about right.

 

My biggest regret is getting rid of my 05 tundra double cab 4x4. Had a second gen tundra and it ain’t nothing like the 1st gen tundra. If they still sold the first gen tundra today I would not hesitate one second to trade in my 5th gen for it. Unfortunately all the 1st gen tundras are high mileage and beat to shit and put away wet and the asking prices ain’t worth it for the high miles and especially ain’t worth what they’re asking for a clean low mile one

 

Here is a unicorn that’s on eBay right now, I think it only has 4741 miles on it. Showroom mint quality.

 

My dad had the predecessor to the Tundra; the T-100. He found a used one the first year they came out, in 1993. I think he bought it in 1994 with 12k miles on it. Well, he owned it until about 4yrs ago. It was black, single cab and a long bed.

It was ugly and loud, but my dad kept telling me "When it stops turning over, I'll sell it." Well, 380k + miles later it finally died on him. He still got $2k for it.

I know, the price is outrageous but when I saw the undercarriage pics I realized if someone was going to go buy a 2019 Tundra but really wanted a 1st Gen then here it is for about the same price. This thing looks like it has never been driven.

 

How is that mileage even possible? That’s less than 400 miles per year.

 

I think it was a barn find, some crazy lil old person that just used it for Lowes runs or something.

The front lower ball joints, and the timing belt are the only real killers of the trucks. ONLY use OEM lower ball joints and Aisin timing belt kits. There are cheaper things on the market but the OEM is by far the best.

 

I saw this too, everything about it says its really that low mileage, seats, interior, undercarriage, engine pix, it had to have been put up and never driven. If you could find the window sticker, that truck probably stickered for about $28,500 and probably sold for about $26,500. There is absolutely no way i would pay an additional +$10,000 over the original sale price for it today but honestly i would really like to have it.

I bought mine like that, i have an 05 double cab white limited, bought it in 2021 with 144,000 miles
Once i got the vin and checked it, it hadnt been driven since 2016. When i bought it, it was green covered in algae and the paint was pure chalk white from sitting outside. It had the original glass, windshield with -0- rock pecks, -0- dings, practically perfect condition inside and out but had clearly been sitting up a while. After i got the title i looked up the guys name and sure'enough there was an obituary for him years prior. I assume after he passed, it sat in his yard until one of his kids finally used it to trade in to a dealer on something for themselves. I bought it from the dealer for practically "get rid of it" price and got it home and cleaned it up and i have been in love with it ever since. I doubt i ever get rid of it unless i come across a newer prettier version which is uber unlikely. I have had people offer me $15,000 for it but i wouldnt dare sell it unless i had another low mileage one lined up. I saw one at a specialty dealer a little while back, Limited double cab, white 4wd, they were asking like $35,000 for it with like 77,000 miles. Whew i really wanted it but i definitely wouldnt pay that kinda money.

 

I would be nervous that it didn’t get driven enough to keep things lubed and functional. That’s too much money considering it may need a lot of parts replaced due to age and inactivity.

 

if you are the type of person who spends that kind of money for a 20 year old Tundra, your pocket is deep enough for a deep refresh. But Toyotas from that era are known to be able to be parked for a long time and go right back to work after you drain the fuel tank and give it an once over.

I helped a buddy buy a 2001 Camry last year that was parked in a car port since I think 2004 with 15k on the clock when the first owner got sick and unable to drive, paid a decent premium for it but well worth it, those 5SFE are true beasts. We washed it, drained the fuel tank and replaced the engine oil and fuel filter, he is driving it now and it drives like a new car.

Man, you sound just like me. I've had a whole lot of vehicles in my life and the one I regret selling most is my 06 Tundra Double Cab 4X4 Limited with the 4.7. Sold it at just over 100K miles. It was almost indistinguishable from new. That thing wore like a piece of iron. Offroad, on road for ten years never missed a beat or cost me a dime beyond fluids, filters a set of brake pads at 80K and a battery at the six year mark.

 

I got married mid 92 and bought a 93 Corolla DX for the wife and a T100 in its first year for me from Longo Toyota on the same day.

Two of the hardest to kill vehicles on the planet.

 

The 93-97 Corollas were some tough SOBs and built to a standard unseen since.

 

6 months later I bought a used 89 Cressida from the same friend at that dealership to transport customers as the T100 wasn't meeting that need (still kept the truck). What a great car. It was essentially the pre-cursor to Lexus at the time and had that glorious straight six. Couldn't tell that thing was running most of the time and had an incredibly smooth, linear power delivery. The Toyotas of that era were mostly dull visually and from a driving experience but they were some of the best pieces of transportation ever built.

 

You guy’s comment are the actual spirit of why I originally posted this on my 4R site. Not wanting the expensive headache of a new Tundra or Taco with their current issues…. I was looking at 2019-2021 Tundra’s and saw how much they were selling for. That’s when it made sense to get a 20 year old truck for $6K. If I fix a few of the known issues on this thing I’ll have both my 4R and it when I leave this earth….lol

 

Of course many will chalk it up to that I'm just behind the times. But one of the examples that grinds my gears is the forced adoption of electronic parking brake.

Why? Are people become so weak and forgetful that they can't use a hand brake or foot pedal? What happens in 15 years when the electronic parking brake module fails and no longer in production? Can aftermarket come up with a replacement that works with the vehicle computer network?

How did we live up to the last ten years or so, and all of a sudden every single basic function of a vehicle has to be controlled by a computer controlled part integrated to the BCM or ECM or TCM or CANBUS or whatever?

 

I sold my 2006 Tundra SR5 Double Cab 4WD TRD a year ago November to facilitate the purchase of my 2022 4Runner SR5 Premium 4WD. I bought my ‘06 Tundra brand new. it had 184,XXX miles on it when I sold it privately. It was never in a wreck. It was a great truck.

I miss it, but mainly only when I need a pickup truck bed. I love my ‘22 T4R so much, it greatly eases the pain of having to let the ‘06 Tundra go.

The very first caller about my ad bought the truck from me. He was thrilled with it. I had 21 inquiries on the truck in the first 24 hours before I deleted my ad.

I really didn’t NEED a new vehicle, the ‘06 Tundra would have lasted me quite a bit longer I suppose, but alas I came down with new truck fever, and had always wanted a 4Runner, and at my old age, I wanted at least one more new truck in my life, so I went looking at 4Runners, and got one. I’ll be 70 come August.

Judging by my successful long term ownership experience with my ‘06 Tundra, I expect my ‘22 T4R to last me the rest of my driving days. Fingers crossed that some SOB doesn’t steal it on me, or some idiot doesn’t hit me and wreck it on me.

If God forbid something bad does happen to my ‘22 T4R, I will find myself another clean late model fifth gen. NO THANKS on sixth gen.

 

Congrats! The Tundra is vey complimentary to the 4R for some of us.
I bought a used 2011 a little over a year ago and it's been extremely useful even though the 4R is my main vehicle.

 

100% the way I feel on all counts. I grow tomatoes and have to go get straw, manure, and top soil and I really hated putting that stuff in the back of my 4R.
