I don't think it matters where you cut. What I would make sure is that gases can leave easily outside and don't stay underneath the vehicle for too long. The last thing you want is exhaust stuff getting in the cabin or reheating the back seat or leaking thru the windows etc. Give it a good chance to be out in the open as it was designed. My 2c.

Fully my concern too. 99% of the time my dog is in the back seat and don’t want him getting ill.

If money is not an issue, I would just swap the entire line for a brand new one and be done with it. If you end up cutting, there will be welding involve all around and if this isn't done well, a little gap or pin-hole will be enough and the gases will start coming out there. Per the look of the line, it looks like it has been thru some.....yeah, some time. I bet the bolts at the flange at the muffler are probably fussed there so probably hard to take out there. Put a magnaflow or something like that if you can.

EDIT: What rear bumper did you get? I am trying to figure out how to proceed here....leaning on Victory 4x4

Here’s a better pick, I got mine from Brute Force Fab.

A trip though, I have a magna flow that was put on in 2020. That’s my other concern is the drone if I have it terminated near my rear axle. Will that just be more annoying than it is now?

oh man, what a beautiful looking bumper that is! Looks real nice and sharp. On the exhaust, I think your best bet is to go OEM then. I used the PRO and tried so many other ones and finally settled on the OEM. It is quiet and zero noise, no drone. I think you can just buy the manifolds that connect to the muffler on both ends and be done.

I found a guy here that wanted to have the PRO I had, he gave me his OEM as per the picture. I had a tip from a Gibson I had and just went with the OEM and it is quiet and no drone. I make sure the tip cleared and went out.

In your case(been following your build). I'd chop right behind the rear axle. Put a turn down tip on it. I had that setup for a few years. Before I got a trd pro exhaust for free. It was better then factory rear exit. I didn't notice the fumes as much as the stock rear exit with rear window down.

    Enjoy your build.

No, I keep getting close but hold off. I’ve the last year I spent a lot of time driving with my wife and poodle up and down I5. I and up going in a buying “stuff” and leaving the engine running for A/C or heat. I’m fearful of cutting it at the rear axle and having the fumes come up.

I might be dumb, but just hesitant is all.

How about side exhaust behind rear tire.
Clamp on tubing parts are easily available. I am planning it myself for elimination of exhaust smell getting sucked into cabin with hatch window open

I hear ya. Can’t be much worse than how it currently is, might as well have a hose attached coming into the rear cargo lol
That would be good, I like that too.

If you don't plan to keep the spare at the stock location, go to a muffler shop and route it straight back but tucked high close to the floor, like this FJ's AFE exhaust:

I don't recommend the AFE exhaust actually designed for the 4Runner. It hangs low because it has to accommodate the spare. It would look really out of place with an HC bumper.
