Yesterday I took in the used 4Runner that I purchased (2023 ORP with 50k miles) to get undercoated and exterior detailed... after I picked up, I noticed the windshield on it is actually an after market PGW windshield and it's got little chips flecks in it.

I honestly don't remember this when I bought it last week. I probably just overlooked it, but is this something a Toyota dealer should have disclosed ? They would obviously see and know that it's not a OEM when they took it in.

    Thanks

No, that's not something they need to disclose.

No, not a red flag. It's a very common replacement item. Chances are you will need to replace the windshield at some point as well.

Not only is it something they don't need to disclose (because it happens to a lot of 4Runner owners), but it won't even show up on a carfax report. Not that you care about that nonsense website...

It's just a piece of glass. It's not a drive line component or a major engine part. It's just glass.

As far as PGW, you are good there. PGW merged with Vitra...they both make OEM equivalent glass for Toyota. I have it in my Tundra and our 2106 4R has it.

No need to be concerned. Happens all the time. We put a PGW in my wife’s 22 Limited and it’s good. Gen 5 Runners do get their share of rock chips and if you’re in an area where there’s lots of gravel trucks on the highways like we are, it’s just a question of time until a rock is going to get you and turn into a crack. PGW is a good choice and it’s what I’ll use again if we have to replace another windshield in either of our Gen 5 Runners.

I'm approaching double digits on how many windshields I've replaced in my '11. The only concern I have is that they replace with a like for like item. What I mean by this is the Limited has a heating strip at the bottom of the glass for wiper thawing. Not sure if the ORP has the same. I had one installer actually install a piece of glass without the heating strip. I made him take it out and replace with the proper glass.

My 40th edition has that strip on it. I guess they do it for a lot more models now. Mine is a 2023 and a "gussied up" version of an SR5 Premium.

Why would they have to disclose an aftermarket windshield on a used vehicle? I would hate to know what kind of aftermarket oil filter was installed!

I'd be more concerned that a 2023 has 50k miles on it

Well, that vehicle is officially 2yrs old now. Plus, a lot of vehicles get sold before their actual model year. The vehicle could have been purchased new in late 2022, as a 2023. Happens all the time.

The average mileage that people drive now (yearly) is between 14 - 15k (national average). Some people drive more, some less. Maybe the original owner was a real road warrior.

Used it for work for 10 months starting in Oct of 22…had a territory to cover.. then did less driving for 14 months… recently traded up for a Land Cruiser.

id rather have a truck with 50k across two Midwest winters versus over 5 winters!

Do your adaptive cruise and lane departure alert work correctly? Any PCS errors? No? Carry on.

Since I have bad experience with poor quality glass installed by Safelite (I think Fuyao or something like that), my eyes always go to glass badge or whatever that thing is called. OEM Toyota glass was much stronger against small rock chips vs this aftermarket glass left a dot on each tiniest chip. Next time I would fight the best to buy a Toyota glass.

When my son was playing travel hockey I had 5 broken windshields in 2 years. The more you drive, the more likely you will get a broken or chipped windshield. It seems to be worse during the winter.

My 2 Previous FJ's were 5x Worst due to their vertical install. I still wish they made them though!

^They made them until two years ago! Just not sold in North America. 2023 UAE model imported into Canuckistan, looks like the base trim with no rear locker or A-Trac:

Wonder how the 250-series LC and GX will fare with a completely flat windshield. Jeep Wranglers and Broncos have Gorilla Glass as options.

I tried to fight with insurance to get OEM.

They said they would do it for an extra $400 on top of my $500 deductible. I said no thanks, just put the Fuyao glass in there.

I just had this done, so too early to tell on Fuyao but it is made in America :notsure:
