A 4Runner is perfectly safe at 85 mph.

Funny how opinions about fuel economy vary. Yes it’s important to me, no I’m not expecting the moon. If my 4Runner averaged 14 MPG like many full-sizers I wouldn’t own one.

But doesn’t mean a Corolla would automatically fit my… I’m going to say it! …use case!

You know, I never thought colder/denser air would increase wind resistance enough to drop mpg…at least at normal road speeds. But the 4runner is a brick, so it makes perfect sense lol.

I think we can work the oil change interval and viscosity debates into this thread if we really wanted to. :D

Exactly. Didn't buy this thing for the gas mileage. I bought it because I've wanted one since they first came out in the mid-1980's and now I finally have one, and hope to keep it as my "forever" vehicle. Still smile every time I get in it. Totally worth it.

Nobody did. Not a single person has ever bought a 4Runner for the gas mileage.

That wasn't the point of the thread until some people popped in to add their irrelevant 2 cents.

Just put on new slightly heavier tires but expected MPG to go up or atleast stay the same since a new tire will have lower rolling resistance. But because it's so cold and needing to warm up my car even a little longer i dropped 1-2mpg. Guess i'll have to wait for the spring to see.

    Getting 13-14 mpg, vs 15-18.

Yes, a reasonable speed returns better mileage. Next…

I found the same thing on a recent road trip to Fort Sumner a couple weekends ago - 65mph, all interstate except the last 20 miles or so, and the return trip the same. 21.2 mpg, hand calculated at the pump, not using the dash numbers. I generally see 18 - 19 mpg around town, except during the dead of winter.

Just turned 19,000 miles on my 4R. Overall fuel mileage, calculated by an Excel spreadsheet, is 22.8 mpg. But then mine is not modified, and I drive mainly dirt roads at no more than 50 mph. No stop lights or stop signs gives great mileage.

This same logic is why I use the toll roads for my commute. $13 a day for 40 minutes less driving. Well worth it for me.

good for you. cruising at perfect conditions at 85 mph is not putting anyones life at danger substantially more than cruising at 80mph speed limits.

same. I just wanted to challenge myself and drive the speed limit for a few tanks to see how much better it can be. But here in phoenix even driving at 75 you are constantly passed left and right. This is def one of the fastest driving areas ive lived in.

No need to get your knickers in a twist. I was referring to the usual tired responses that come up in mpg threads, not your original post. In fact, if you noticed, I quoted your OP with some input for your initial question.

nah bro im good just saying. But im very familiar with what ya mean. I had a Tacoma previous to this and I was active in that forum that was also very active, so I saw it all. My fav are the guys who will tell you based on their advanced understanding of engineering what the actual tow capacity should be, second are the ones who make claims why premium fuel must be used, even though the engines are designed for standard. Trying to bring a little traffic to this forum, it has the capacity to be really good.

Yeah, those are funny. There was a member here or on Tacomaworld a few years ago insisting that anyone using regular was just cheap, or couldn't afford "good" gas. Several people tried explaining that he was throwing money away, but he couldn't accept it.

I knew when I saw 'another MPG thread', it might get sketchy, but here I am.. finally. We put gas in our 4Runner when we need to, mileage is a concern, due to the fact money does not grow on trees. We have gotten close to 20 MPG, also 14 MPG. Living in a colder climate I bet MPG is closer to the 14-16. Riding in our 4Runner sure beats the hell of driving around in a horse and buggy though! Lots of amish where we live.

I see a lot of Amish around Adams county when I'm visiting my ex. A lot up near Eau Claire, too.

I avoid interstate on my 40 minute commute and take the country roads. Better MPG, less stressful, scenic, and avoid 18-wheelers and traffic. Curvy with one stop sign. Avg 40-50 mph most days and one day I hit 25 MPG. It was like a contest once I hit 23 to see how high I could get before getting home. It was windy and I was headed downwind. .

(SR5P stock suspension and tires for now…)
