    In my area, sourh west Illinois, they spray salt brine on the roads any time it gets close to freezing.

    When I lived in WI, I used the presence of brine stripes on the road to tell me when precipitation was coming!

    Around here they spray it the day before the storm so your car gets a salt treatment even if you plan on staying home during the actual storm. A lot of times the storm doesn’t even materialize.

    Last winter was so gentle that northern Michigan road crews now have mountains of salt, and apparently they're gonna use all it this year, lol.

    It’s probably a regional thing but sometimes around me they mix sand with salt.
