my entire personality is based off of having a dog :D . In all seriousness, this is the main reason I got the runner. Lots of Dog adventures. My wife and I have taken on camping, roadtripping, and love having an SUV. We got tired of renting vehicles for our roadtrips because we drive older vehicles.

Kennel is really the way to go.
Dog's don't need as much comfort as we think.
    Rather they be safe.
And you can't cheap out and put a flimsy plastic crate back there that is impossible to tie down and would disintegrate in an accident.
#Gunner Kennels = expensive and worth it.

The Ruffland Kennel that CalcityRenegade posted is also an excellent choice.

The small one is for a 15lb mix dog and the big one is for a 73lb Malinois.

I protect the bumper with a rubber mat from Home Depot that rolls up nicely.
And I use a Weather Tech dog ramp.

Great thread/ I know its a bit old, but two minor things come to mind. Why is there not a front passenger seat cover that fits a 4runner, specific to a 4runner. This vehicle has been around a while, and I would figure canvas back or someone would make a simple slip over.
My dog refuses to be behind me if seat is open..
And, what separator do you recommend to keep him from coming up to the front if you have too.

My biggest problem with the large kennels is space. The online time I take the dogs on road trips/hunting trips, I need to carry a metric f-ton of gear with me, and two of the large crates doesn't allow that. One dog is 73lbs and the other is 78lbs - can't go with any intermediate sizes. Not building an offroad trailer.

I have an Otto step for my boy Henry. He rides in my car multiple days a week and the only annoying thing is I have to take the tow hook off every time to put the step in the hitch.
    IMG_4899.jpg
Considered using a ramp instead but this step takes up so little room and is light weight.

Another recommendation for Canvasback as well as K9 Ballistics for dog beds. The pup and gear pretty much occupy the backseat / trunk area so I might just delete the rear seats and set up a platform. One thing I noticed on multiday wheeling trips is dogs do tire of being “thrown around” in the back. Each time I looked back after climbing some steep grades last trip my pup had slid all the way to the rear so thinking of setting up some cargo net / divider that would keep her right behind the front seats where she likes to hang out.

My personal pick for seat back protection: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0BFQVXHSD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&th=1

Saw these on here, and found a variety of Chinese brands selling the same product. You can get them with and without the truck liner (although I'd get their trunk liner if I were to do it again). They velcro in place, and their trunk liner actually covers the little ramp at the bottom of the seat backs.

Lately though, the dog has been riding in the front passenger seat, with my wife and baby in the back seat, and the cargo space full of as much shit as you can imagine with both a baby and a dog.

It's time for me to get a barrier between the second row and cargo area. My little 10-month-old Brittany chewed the plastic clips holding the back of the second-row seat protector that goes around the headrests. Ugh!

To follow-up on this, I went full Canvasback on our 4runner (almost every accessory they make!), setup a makeshift barrier (2 pillows, baby gate, and bungie cord) until our Raingler net arrives. Also added a dog bed, blanket, and leash to our dog's harness.

I'm considering replacing the oem rubber mats with either Weathertech or Husky, but holding off for now.

Never could get the velcro tape to stick to the "softex" interior pieces on the rear doors.
