Hello. I bought a new 5th gen 4Runner a few months ago and I have been trying to take it easy during the break in period since I plan on keeping it for a long time.

I’ve seen a lot of forums talking about the best break in procedures but nothing seems to mention the occasional wide open throttle. I’ve had a few situations trying to pass people on the back roads where I live and as we all know you have to push it pretty hard to get it to pass anybody. The first time I had about 400 miles on it and the vehicle red lined for a few seconds when passing. Some of the things I’ve read said you can cause damage to the rings and it could end up burning oil as it gets older if the break in procedure isn’t followed.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    You're fine. It's a Toyota.

My brother has a 4Runner, he ran it hard when it bought it brand new. He’s never had any issues, no burning oil, no leaks. You’ll be ok redlining it. I just wouldn’t do it every day until 1k

The higher the mileage the safer it will be to have some full throttle. 400mi is okay red line for a few seconds. I purposely relined my Mazda at 500mi to add a little more polish to the cylinders, no issues.

As mentioned I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're not beating the piss out of it non-stop, it's going to be fine.

As long as you change oil every 1450 miles with Mobil Super Tech Maxlife you are good.
Oh and that WOT during break in is no issues. As long as it's for a short period of time and not regularly. Your truck is fine.

WOT is good at break-in s long as you keep RPM down.

Redlining at break-in is not a good idea.

I broke mine in, how I am going to drive it. I did however avoid sustaining RPM's for long periods of time. Mine has yet to explode.

Imagine all the ex-fleet 4Runners that are for sale now for more than new MSRP. I doubt they were broken in as directed.

You don't want to see how they are handled between ports, ships, rail cars, and car carriers.

There are a ton of fleet 4Runners for sale right now. For shits and giggles I went to go look at one right up the road from me.

had no weather mats, no jack and tool, usb port cover broken off, and underneath looked dirty ass hell. And to top it off, when you buy a ex-rental you usually only get 1 key too.

*sometimes* you can find a good one available with low miles, especially if you were one of the first drivers of it and were driving it while you were in an accident, you could probably get a good deal on it. I wouldn’t purchase a ex rental or fleet if it didn’t have the 3 year warranty expired

Welcome from Wisconsin! No, an occasional "higher RPM" won't/shouldn't hurt that 4Runner. I take it when you say 'back roads' your talking paved road surface?

You're past 1000 miles now? Are you burning oil? If not, then you're fine.

Thanks. I’ve been looking at some off road trails in Wisconsin since there aren’t a lot around here. Yeah, paved back roads.

I’m still around 700 miles. I’m not sure how I would tell if I’m burning oil since the vehicle is so new but I haven’t smelled anything.

Record oil level on the dipstick when you reach 1000 miles. Check again at 2000 miles and see if the oil qty has dropped by more than a quart.

There are tons of off-road trails here, exploration is the key. In most cases these roads are accessible. Our 'back roads'.. gravel, ya, anyway that is what I pictured when you said 'back roads', and ya there are some people that pass on these gravel roads, but it's frowned upon locally for the flying gravel stones(windshields, other windows). Explore Wisconsin! You might like what you find. That should damn near be the state motto! See ya.

Although not Toyota, I work with a Police Fleet. Their break in procedure is to pass it around to 44 different drivers to see how fast it goes, then let it idle for the rest of the shift. Repeat 24/7 for the next 5 years.

My BIL drove a new car carrier, and said the same. If you saw what new cars go through, you would never buy another one.
