I have no interest in the 6th gen. No temptation. I don't like the price. I don't like the looks. I don't like the idea of it having a little piss ant 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine. I will be keeping my 2022.

Not me. If I trade, it’ll be for a GX550.

I'm cynical. Automakers are now pigeon-holed by gov to do more with less. It's a big ask. As always, time will tell on gen6 but... y'all know it's gonna suck in some aspects. It's not Toyotas fault. In the current automotive development climate, it's all about compromise. They're being asked to do difficult things.

They could and can make a perfect engine/trans that would make 100% of a particular customer base happy but... they're not allowed to do it because it burns an ounce too much gas every 20 miles.

I had a 2.4 of years gone by.
We would take a look at one, when available, having a '20 ORP we've grown to really like the 4Runner (1st one). The thing that sways me away is the price tag on a new ORP. I have to wait until the 4cyl. turbo is proven or idea scrapped before I have no faith in it. I had a '86 pickup with the 22re and an auto trans, real pooch, but the engine and trans couldn't be killed. We towed a U-Haul trl. (tandem) to Florida when we moved there, also when we moved back to Wis., Monteagle will test vehicles towing/braking, this is a "No shitter", the pickup runs today yet, although it's not on the road anymore, it's used to gather maple sap, but... It's Alive! I imagine this new 4cyl. is a collective gathering of info before it was introduced. The old 4cyl. I'm talking about was also turbo'ed in certain cases.. the 22re-t.

Going to hold on to the 4runner. It's 2011, and will not fetch much value in trade without adding considerable funds if I want comparable relatability.
I will as some point get a used LX570 from MY 18-21. It should have everything I want in a luxury 4x4.
I believe a lot of people that will buy the new 4Runner will be first time 4runner buyers. But these people also have access to the new Land cruiser and the GX.

I've seen a good number of the new tacos around, and honestly the more I see them, the less I like them. They overstyled the design, there are way too many creases and body body lines, they tried too hard to make it look "tough"

Meanwhile, every time I see a new Colorado/ /Canyon, I think to myself, damn that's a good looking truck.

Agreed. When I look at pictures, it's just too busy. I don't hate them. I'm just not sure if I like them.

I wonder how quickly they'll do a refresh on the front end. Based on the comments I read, they should probably start working on it now.

I’m wondering who these first time 4Runner buyers will be. There are so many other SUVs available at or below the 6th gen prices. What makes someone want this new version with questionable looks and reliability, lots of interior plastics, small backseat space, etc.

That's where the 4runner lineage come into play.
Non 4runner buyers think about the 4runner as this tough utilitarian truck that can also be driven on roads. Plus it's cool to drive one.
You ll be amazed how many more female drivers I see driving a 4runner than males.
For them, this new one is softer, better equipped, upgraded, etc etc. On paper, it has all the bells and whistles. That's all that matters to most buyers.
Purists or even pseudo purists will likely hold on to their current ones for longer. Most have bought new in the last few years and it makes no sense to sell a 3 year old 4Runner for a new untried and untested model.
I personally like the looks of the new smaller LC better than the 4runner. But for someone in the market for a reliable 4x4 there is something for everyone from 50k to 80k.

Yes. It took the buying public a decade or more to figure out Mercedes Benz ain't what it used to be. Especially at the entry level price point.

The new body on frame offerings from Toyota remind me of GM, specifically Cadillac for a while when they all looked like transformers. Then Honda/Acura followed suit with the extreme example being the Civic type R. In that segment I’m more of a VW Golf R, understated sleeper kind of guy than boy racer video game. In our segment, the explorer (aka Range Rover ripoff), though I wouldn’t buy one, is more to my liking from a styling standpoint

Maybe it’s what the people want. It could be a generational thing. The new 4Runner is just trying too hard for me, looks awkward and is out of proportion.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.

Softer? This one is designed to look tough with a sharp angular design and big fender flares. The interior has lots of hard plastic and plastic molle panels everywhere. None of this is what I picture most female drivers wanting. It looks like it’s designed for 20 year olds yet the pricing is set for upper middle class adults?

For a many years I thought Toyota trucks were grossly overpriced. That is, until I could actually afford one. Also, I didn’t like the looks of the 5th gen when it was refreshed to the current look, until I did like it - a lot. The crazy prices and looks of the 6th gen hold fast to that tradition. No, I won’t be trading my 2022 ORP, but I think they’ll sell reasonably well despite the price, particularly to people who are new to 4Runners (already stated here). High prices and epically long financing terms are the new reality.

Okay this is going to sound silly. I want to love the GX550. The thing is, I hate a black interior. My 4Runner has one, but at least the headliner is light gray. The headliner in the 550 and the Land Cruiser are black (or very dark.) Cars with an all-black interior have such a claustrophobic feeling. It’s a deal breaker for me.

    And no, I won’t be getting a 6th gen. I’ll probably find a lovingly restored/maintained 4th or 5th gen Bronco.

    This.

Most owners are not on these forums, I would even say that most 4Runner owners are not auto enthusiasts at all. I have a female friend that is on her second 5th gen, a 2024 SR5, and she has just always wanted a 4Runner due to the image, and the reputation. She has zero interest in taking it off-road, but she likes the reputation and the cargo room.

She actually got the 2024 after the 6th gen was revealed, she was disappointed in it. She decided to lease a 2024 to give it a few years to see what happens with the 6th gen.

I think a lot of people are going to see the 6th gen and think it looks cool, not know anything about the drivetrain other than that "Toyotas are reliable" and will buy them because they're new and shiny.

Edit: I'll add, I'm actually looking forward to test driving one. I'm not worried about falling in love with it, I really dislike the look and the interior, however, I'm really curious about the new drivetrain.

I know what happened, this forum has a quirk where it remembers what you are typing and if you open a new tab the draft post is retained. If you quote one post in one thread, and then go to another thread, I have seen entire quotes from the first thread being carried over.

I must have cut out certain parts of two quotes from two threads but left the initial poster of the other thread as the poster of the 2nd thread.

The newer Canyons had me do double takes to make sure it wasn't a Silverado.

With creative financing even 20 year olds can sign up for upper middle class sums.

I can just see the salesman cheering the buyer on "hell yeah, besides these things keep their value forever so what if it's 65k plus T&L".

Not me. I have put too much $$ into my build. I actually want to get my hands on an older LandCruiser v8, but the prices are high.
