New 4Runner owner here…. Have a stock ‘24 TRD Pro. Looking for a good set of mud/max traction tires in 265 70/17 but every one that I look at says that it will not fit my vehicle. It came from the factory w 265 70/17s (Nitto Terra Grapplers which are more AT than MT)…. Any reason a mud/max traction tire of the exact same size wouldn’t fit? A little baffled here…. Thanks in advance for any thoughts, info, advice..

No reason for any 265/70/17 to not fit. If you ask for a tire rec here you're going to get 7 brands that people swear by, and 7 diff people swearing that one of those same brands were dogshit. Look at ratings on Tire Rack or Discount Tire, decide what's important to you, and Then Use the Search function in this forum and tire forum to look for your picks and see what people are saying.

that’s exactly what I figured, just want to make sure there isn’t something I’m unaware of before I order a set. I’ve purchased plenty of mud tires in my life for different vehicles and this is the first time that most major brands say they won’t fit my vehicle model or trim level, which is extremely strange since the pro is pretty much built for one thing lol..

I too have no clue why would 265/70R17 M/Ts or Hybrids would not fit.
Highly suggest going to a good tire shop like Discount tire. They even agree to do a test fit bigger size A/T tire and if it doesn't fit put back stock size. They were very good to me.

KM3 is the tire I recommend and Discount Tire the place, don't go anywhere else.

And buy their certificates, its absolutely worth it. They gave me a brand spanking new 34" KM3 when the flat couldn't be patched.

I was looking for tires based on size, not vehicle and never had this problem. Duratracs stock size fit fine on 4Runner, but probably they won't be listed as compatible with 4Runner especially in LT variant : )

BFG KO3 is a great tire, as mentioned above.

I have the Yokohama MT G003, and no complaints. Reasonably quiet for an MT, grippy, great in mud, and I'm getting surprisingly good treadwear out of them.

Mickey Thompson has a few good options. The Baja Boss MT will probably be my next set.

Overall, your best bet is to shop by user ratings. Everyone is going to be biased toward whatever they're running, unless they really don't like them.

Just thinking out loud since OP says "New 4Runner owner here…. Have a stock ‘24 TRD Pro.", should he get some experience how the 4R is without going all the way to M/Ts? I wonder an aggressive A/T to start with or may be hybrids like Nitto Ridge Grapplers? (Stock size load E still at 55lbs)

For your comment "I have the Yokohama MT G003, and no complaints. Reasonably quiet for an MT"
(Absolutely no disrespect) but I think tire noise at highway speed may not be a big deal for a TRD Pro as the exhaust is in the louder side.

I would tend to agree with you, since MT's really aren't great for daily driving. And, they're junk in winter. But, the OP specifically asked about M/T's, so I'm just replying to the question.

I don't know how loud the PRO exhaust is, but I doubt it's nearly as bad as some M/T's. Mine are on the quiet side for an M/T, but they're still pretty noticeable at speed.

I'll pile on - don't get a "mud tire." Get an "all terrain." Like @Yotaholic, I'm a fan of BFG KO2 and KO3s (KO3 is the just-out newer version) and Discount Tire. I've had the BFG KOs and MTs (their mud terrains) on lots of trucks. The MTs were on Jeep CJs (before I saw the light and became a Toyota convert) and were not intended to be "street" trucks. To be clear, MTs are definitely streetable, they just have some quirks, e.g., tracking differently on some pavement, noise, etc. I've heard great things about the Falken Wildpeak and the Nitto Terra Grappler too.

Tire company pics can be deceiving. Some real world pics may help...
(I have the KO2 on my Land Cruiser and 4Runner too, but the little truck shows more of the tire - better for comparison)
The Toyota has BFG KO2s and the CJ has BFG MTs

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I don't have mud terrain tires on my 4Runner, but yeaaaaaaars ago I had to drive a Jeep with mud terrain tires. I took it muddin' and it was tons of fun.

In the mud and in soft soil areas they rocked. I loved them. Then I had to drive that Jeep on pavement back home. 25 miles of God awful road noise and bad handling. The MPG's were absolute crap too, because each tire weighed about 88lbs. So it was slow, sucked up a ton of gas and loud. The road noise was so loud (mainly because the Jeep had zero insulation) that I had a migraine when I finally got home.

It wasn't my Jeep, it was my buddy's. He told me that he swaps out the tires after he's done "muddin" in it. Then he puts on All Terrains or street tires because of the road noise. Dick. That's why he let me drive his Jeep home.

I'm a very big fan of Cooper tires. I currently run their Evo M/T and I love them. They are incredibly grippy when it comes to rock crawling and they are very strong and durable. I really like the aesthetics of them as well. One con of M/T is that they are loud as hell though!

Check out Interco Tires. If youre really interested in the "best" mud tires, you'll want to give them a look.

MT as in Mud Terrain, or MT as in Max Traction? I always understood MT to denote Mud Terrain.

However, my wife's new Silverado Trailboss came with optional Goodyear Territory MT's (versus standard AT's)....... and looking at the tire sidewalls when we took delivery of the truck, I was surprised to see that MT was an abbreviation for Max Traction, not Mud Terrain.

Is Mud Terrain different than Max Traction? Different than a Rugged All Terrain? I don't know. Maybe it is just a case of different manufacturer naming conventions.

I prefer Mickey Thompson. These are DOT approved up to 58"!

    Yep - MT, M/T = Mud Terrain.

I had those Intercos (Boggers) on a CJ. They were great on all surfaces… except streets… and roads. Definitely not highways.

It's because they will rub. AT tires in the factory size rub and that's why Toyota has a tsb on trimming TRD Pro bumpers for clearance.

But honestly, how much utility is someone really going to get out of a sub 32" MT
