These 18-in alloy wheels with the TRD logo center cap throw down while styling up.

That’s yet another example of corner-cutting nonsense driven by EPA standards. Unbelievable. They reduce weight by removing the spare tire but add a hybrid battery, and then you’ll need another vehicle—likely burning fossil fuels—to come rescue you when you get a flat.

 

We started playing those out on the LC forum.

 

So between the power driver seat and the lack of spares that's a few hundred dollars they were able to save to keep the "starting" price where it is. I wonder what else are gone that have not been noticed yet.

 

wait a few years, toyota will slowly add those features back as new stuff each year

 

I have lost a lot of respect for Toyota. I won't be buying a new 4runner or Tacoma. Too much money and too many other option in other manufacturers.

 

What other manufacturers would you consider?

 

I didn’t necessarily mean me, I'm keeping my 5th gen forever. Ford Raptor is a good alternative to the Tacoma Pro and the Bronco is cheaper than the 4Runner and offers a v-6.

 

Along with price increases.

Though the ditching of spare tires seems to be an industry trend so I wouldn't count on that coming back without customer backlash(which is unlikely).

 

These wheels won't be as reliable as the 5th gen wheels.

 

Now anyone spending any time here knows I'm no big fan of CAFE and EPA.

That being said, the weight savings of a spare tire is minimal in impacting the CAFE rating. the 4wd sR5 has same MPG rating as a gas OR at 19/25/21. The overall percentage of the whole vehicle the spare weighs down is pretty small to have any real impact on the emissions component.

Ditching the spare is just purely patting the margins for Toyota since the frame is the same and the mounting recepticle is there.

 

Can’t stand Gen better than another Gen bashing but this was clever

 

Argument could be made that since the offset has been increased, it puts more stress on the parts surrounding the hubs with more torque in stress vectors, as well as slightly more off-center force imposed on the wheels under large hits and G-outs.

 

6th Gen benefits on a larger studs and 14x1.5mm lug nuts for better thread engagement. Also smaller hub bore 95.1mm the wheel would have better surface seating area.

 

Whatever it took to avoid engineering wider control arms for proper longer travel while still claiming wider track, what mattered was it was cheaper this way.
