Nice. I thought those cartridge filters were supposed to save the world with less metal waste? Maybe someone realized that it wasn’t worth the 100x more rags needed to clean up the inevitable mess they made.

Seems like a step backwards. I always have paper towels handy when I'm changing the oil, so it didn't really bother me.

    Mall crawling kit.
I disagree. New administration is all but certain to take a hammer to EPA and intend on boosting oil production - so you will have cheap gasoline and less emission and economy mandates. Toyota will be left with unpopular engine configuration while losing truck and 4WD SUV market share to competition. My bet 2028 F-150 lineup will be zero EVs and a whole bunch of V8s.

Not quite, remember that CARB states fought tooth and nail to keep in place the dramatic CAFE raise some years later that BHO put in place in late 2016/early 2017 when DJT's proposal just wanted to freeze the then-current CAFE standard. Whatever action to EPA will be bitterly fougt this time around too. EPA employees are for the most part lifers and now a days they are solidly pro EV.

Not taking sides here, just stating what happened.

Toyota’s planners would want an engine they could use in many markets, not just the US market and plans are put together far ahead in advance - it’s very tough to predict changes in regulatory direction and it’ll be safer to be ahead of potential regulations than expect to fall short - effectively betting on a number of elections.

spending the money lining up/keeping the supply chain for a V8 that may never be feasible to put in isn’t easy too.

I doubt Ford would be keen on betting so big on the reins of government never changing again. I bet if anything the 5.0 may continue to stick around but the EcoBoost will continue to be their bread-and-butter.

I bet the PowerBoost won’t be leaving either especially with its 7.2 kW party trick.

They still make the 1GR for the LC 300, 70, Prado, as well as Fortuner and Hilux for overseas market so clearly they don't know their market as well as you do. You should give them a call and let them know.

The new LC/Prado does not have anything but an I4 in any market, but I bet you sure felt you had a “gotcha!” there.

Yes I know the 1GR is still made, the issue is long-term planning and available capacity.

Even if Toyota decided they would like to explore putting the 1GR in every new 4Runner, there likely won’t be enough available capacity to pull that off.

Now that they’d have to build tens of thousands more engines than their supply chain was planned for, (from contracts, suppliers, material sourcing, factory capacity etc) that is a big ship to turn around especially if the 1GR was already being phased out or limited to certain models as it is now.

Oh that's right, the full size LC has the 3.5 turbo that's being recalled state side and Tundras/Sequoias are piling up on dealer lots with no takers. So there is that, perhaps you should also give them some advice on how to build engines.

I burn my oily rags in the fire pit. Same with traditional oil filters. Then throw the burned/cleaned steel in the recycling.

There are a lot of homeless encampments near a lot of drainage canals and natural arroyos and streams around where I live, and every time the cops try to clear them out the local do gooders protest and hamper the effort, yet the local homeless shelters and campgrounds have plenty of open spaces because they have pesky rules about drugs and such. Whatever you are throwing into the water is nothing compared to what they dump into the watershed.

But EPA and CARB are cool with the vagrants contaminating water system because reasons. LOL.

I don’t know why you’re bringing up the 3.4 (not 3.5) or my supposed engine design expertise in an exchange about why Toyota can’t easily just bring back the 1GR with a snap of it’s fingers.

If you don’t care to understand the effort of turning a large manufacturing operating on a dime then this chat is beyond you.

But not a 1GR as bigly-smart FourBelugas has been on about.

Those are I4’s as well and I expect Toyota already plans to keep those around for this generation AND planned for them to be used from the start of development of the new platform.

Oh hey look, another partisan hack using tired old snide "humor" to deflect the issues with toyota's "bigly smart" problems with their turbo gas motors

    LOL.

Can't have those here since EPA and CARB will have literal heart attacks if they were sold here. I'm sure our brilliant forward looking resident Toyota engine experts will come along shortly and tell us why that's a good thing Toyota can't certify those things here and that it is a great ting almost every light duty diesel motor across all brands has been withdrawn from the US save for the 3.0L GM used in full size trucks and SUVs, and that 9000lb EV trucks are the future.

yes its a cost cutting measure but in the sense i am guessing its easier to meet regulations across the world with 1 engine than trying to meet regulations with 10-15 different engines across the world.

It's being used in the Alphard in Japan, and the J250 Landcruiser in multiple markets. Possibly others.. That was just what I found with a quick search.
