I am going to install my Vantrue dash cam in my 4Runner ... however, there is no cig lighter outlet in the dash area.

I only have a cig lighter outlet inside the console and that is too far away.

Any ideas on best place to wire this dash and cam and setting up the fuse ??

Ok for me to do some minor wiring, but I don't want to take the dash apart.

Took my dash apart once in my life o_O and it took forever to put it back without rattles.

So the factory 12v outlet is changed to the USB charging thing? Does the dashcam allow to use USB or the 12v socket is fixed to the wire? ( Asking since some dashcam come with 12v socket and the wire can be detached from the 12v socket)

If not I guess you might have to use a hard wire kit that requires some wiring work.

...^^^... Vantrue dash cam is 2 years old and has 12vdc cig lighter power cable. I only have USB on the 4Runner, except inside the center console.

I need to find the best place to direct wire and fuse it without too much trouble.

Buy a hardwire kit for 20 bucks on the Jungle site about a 30 minute job or less. Really no way to screw it up. Just went through this Friday

i have the same thing. I did it in about 15 minutes. Hardest part was getting the cover off because I was afraid to break clips. There are a couple of YouTube videos that show you how to install it. I got the dongar adapter from Amazon, from the same company linked above, just shipped faster.

I ran my cig lighter power cable from the center consol area to my dash light with no issues. I drilled a small hole out in the consol and fed it through the shifter area, under/behind the glove box, up behind the pillar and underneath the headliner. Took me maybe 15 mins.

    Pre 2014 there’s a 12V outlet in the glove box. After 2014 it’s just a blank plug.

I just did an add a fuse into the footwell fuse panel. Easy peasy and no dash panel pulling, just a couple down low that were simple.

You just need a screwdriver I believe. Since you’re capable of taking a dash apart I think you can do this easily. I think it took me a bit under 30 minutes.

See if you can look at installation instructions ahead of time if that’ll help.

Dongar is king. It's the easiest way to do it for sure.

Thanks for all of the info. I am new to this site but I was on TundraSolutions and TacomaWold for a lone time.

FWIW, I have a VanTrue Dash cam and its my third one from that company with no issues.

Interested in any comments on how your guys mounted your secondary rear dash cams with a roll down rear window ??

...^^^... I have the VanTrue dash cam temporarily wired into the OBD port via their special plug and it powers the cam 24/7 so I have to turn off the cam, but can leave it on when parked ???

I am curious IF the powered rear view mirror is "switched power" to the cam or "always on power" to the cam ? I can work with it either way.

My Dongar cable should be here in a few days.

Mine is hardwired to fuse box for the parking mode. But if you just want easy power when the truck is on, Dongar FTW ALL DAY!

I just installed a Vantrue dash cam. I got the wiring kit from Naponal brand wiring kit from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CSPJTB3Q?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title), all you need, however, just be sure you get the right pin match for your car (check them first). For outstanding instructions, see the install vid from Trail Grid Pro: https://trailgridpro.com/products/dash-cam-power-adapter-03-22-4runner.

I would have ordered the wiring kit from Trail Grid Pro but it would have taken too long to get here.

    Super easy and quick job.

I have not tried to tackle the rear cam yet and that is clearly a whole lot more complicated.

My camera turns off when I turn off the 4Runner, comes on when I start the truck.

Rear cam installation was easy. My husband took less than 10 minutes to do that.

I have had 3 VanTrue cams (past & present) and they are great. ETSY has a special bracket for the rear cam installation.

It is basically a "U CLIP" that slides under your headliner and allows the rear cam to stick to it and not touch the back window glass when you open it.

What I run on my Garmin cam, best option imo. Took around 5-10 minutes to install. This is my second vehicle with this set up highly recommend.
