Is a used 2023 ORP with 20k miles worth $50k?!

Looking at buying my first 4R. It’s an 2023 ORP trim with low mileage (less than 20k) but I can’t get over the price of 50k…that was after negotiating. I’ve tried comparing online and using kbb which tell me this is just above the high end of acceptable price but figured you all would understand the market better than kbb in terms of value. Is this a decent buy? Thanks!

Part of that answer is what your alternatives look like, does it have to be an ORP, is it a less common color you want? Are you set on 2023?

It also can vary location to location and on your willingness to travel.

I do think it’s too steep though, with no additional context other than your post admittedly.

While I do think the asking price is too high, keep in mind that due to high inflation $50K in 2024 dollars corresponds to about $46K in 2022 dollars when 23s were sold or $40K pre-COVID.

Reason why I bought mine new. It was the same price as a used one with low mileage

It doesn’t have to be an ORP but I got there because the SR5 options weren’t really more than a couple grand cheaper for similar mileage and year so I figured just go for it. Options would be a honda pilot trail sport new. I wanted a 4r new but that’s not an option of course so I was trying to get as close as possible. I mainly want it for car camping, towing a small trailer, backpacking, road tripping with the kids, surfing and general outdoors activities. No hard core off roading so I could probably do that in a pilot but the 4 runner has character and looks better and has better off road capability if needed. An sr5 4x would be fine but still paying pilot prices for a lightly used one.

CarMax offered me $49k for my 40th Anniversary w/15k miles on it. It's basically an SR5P.

A few months ago, they offered me $44,600. Odd?

This is completely irrelevant to the OPs question since buying new is no longer on the table but lets give ourselves a pat on the back anyway.

Used 4R prices have increased a bit recently and it seems to me like they will stay that way untill the 6th gen relieves (or increases?) some of the demand pressure.

OP, what options come on this ORP? MTM, moonroof, KDSS etc? 1 owner? Is it pristine all around? This price seems typical with current market conditions foe the 4R. If its really good I could see paying this.

If you test drive a pilot please report back. Good luck with your search. Even though 4Rs are pricey at least there is a lot to choose from.

I haven’t yet seen it in person but from the owner report and pictures it looks to be in very good condition and mostly driven on the freeway. I does have the trd wheel package and a trd front grill with predator step tubes so it does have some appealing add ons. My only hang up is it does have a 3 inch spacer lift which looks nice with the 33 inch off road tires but ultimately I would want to return this to stock to preserve the life of the ball joints/cv joints and increase gas mileage as it would be my daily driver as well.

I inquired about kdss but the owner is unsure and thinks that is not on the car…i also called the dealer that sold it and they did not report kdss. I think that’s all for options as far as the dealer and seller report.

Def let you know my impressions of the pilot if I test drive one…might do that tomorrow actually.

Agree with the previous post that there is probably the least amount inventory right now between the 6th gen not out yet and the 5th gen v6 fever that prices are getting a little extra inflated. I think used cars are holding value in this market in general right now. Want to make a responsible purchase though which seems borderline at this price and could seem very overpriced in 6 months-1year when the market for these cools off a little.

My brother has a Honda Pilot. I think it's a 2022? It's the TrailSport trim level. I haven't driven it, but I've been driven in it. It does ride really nice and has a lot of creature comforts, including a 3rd row. It looks ugly though. Every time I'm in it, I tell him how I can hear his vagina getting bigger as he drives it.

I break his balls every time he drives it over to my house; which will be today in fact. I need to come up with new material to insult him.

Thought of sharing what I think.
Based on secondhand experience with 2 of my friends Pilot they have poor reliability. Surely cylinder deactivation, direct injection only, maintenance like timing belt and valve adjustment is not my cup of tea. Its poor ground clearance would not help on camping trips as well.

I really loved my SR5 with 7seats and no moonroof. If I need hard offroad needs I could have added both front and rear e-lockers for not much money. Mine did have a spacer lift but I would not do it again. I did not have any issues with it but like suspension upgrade over using stock suspension if I were to lift. My buddy's SR5 got same spacerlift and I believe its rocking 80 or 85K miles trouble free.

TRD ORP is a nice trim with all the offroad goodies. However the 4wd selector is too hard for Mrs to use. So I select on behalf of her from passenger seat. Sometimes I wish it had 7 seat option as well so I can have more people in my car when I take colleagues to lunch out or taking my kid's friends to movies or other places.

Mrs use a 2019 Limited. The biggest reason is having full-time 4wd. She doesn't have to mess with 4WD system regardless the weather. Having 9.6in ground clearance is perfect for any snow storm we have faced here in CO. Right now it has a mild lift with 17in wheels and tires, Mrs went out on a snow storm with 20in snow couple of weeks back and didn't even call me to ask if she needs to lock the center diff. Just drove as is like any other day.

    Edit -
I'm not a fan of skinnier TRD Pro wheels, TRD Pro grill on TRD ORP, black out badges, predator steps. I love the classic wider TRD ORP wheels, regular grill to match the silver bumper valance, atleast to my taste on my silver TRD ORP. Having kids and dog I much prefer full running boards over predator steps.

Look at Cargurus. If you're willing to travel you can find a bunch on lots. I picked up my 23 Pro in June for $49k with less than 10k miles. I had it narrowed down to a Limited or Pro because of the options. Dual climate control was a must and in 23 they added rear cross traffic. If the mileage doesn't bother you, this one is a good price. They have had it for 114 days, make them an offer.

I didn’t realize dealerships have nearly no more 4Runners on the lot. Out of curiosity I checked in my area and there’s only 1 new ORP available within 500 miles and the price tag is $64k! That’s insane.

good luck OP finding what you want. Hopefully you’ll come across something that suits you

Agreed on the predator steps, I would probably sell them and get running boards…but I do like some black wheels on these cars.

I have less than 5,000 miles on my 2024 4Runner SR5. Thanks to our California Governor and the CARB, we are looking at probably a $1.00 increase in the price of gas
in the relatively near future. I was just thinking of the possibility of selling my 4R in that event. Going to buy a street legal golf cart.

Are you looking at only Toyota dealers? Purchased my 2023 4Runner 4WD LTD with almost every available Toyota option ($56.6k new) from a BMW dealer in late September for $45k and they gave me $3K more than the Lexus dealers (was cross shopping for a GX460) for my RC 350 trade, so one could say it was $42k for the 4R. It was serviced every 5K miles at a Toyota dealership and clean one owner Car Fax. In 2 months have put 3,000 miles on the 4R enjoying it in the north GA mountains.

I have been shopping there as well. In fact there is an sr5p with 50kmi for about 41k. That just might fit the bill.

I’m in SoCal so that’s good to know. Thing is if you want an off road capable vehicle it seems none of them really make it cheap. I presume the 6th gen 4 runner will do better but probably 3mpg better i’m guessing? The dark horse in this race for me is a golf r as I’ve driven manual for 20 years…would pay any amount of money for a manual 4 runner.

I think the real question, in light of the now-shrinking availability of 4 Runners, is this: do YOU think it's worth it? We can all offer opinions, but value is what you think it is. Could you save a couple thousand by waiting and searching? Maybe. There probably aren't many 2-year-old 4Runners with these options and <20k miles nearby, so apples-to-apples comparisons will be difficult. I would definitely ask about removing the lift, as I wouldn't want one. But buy what you like and decide ahead of time to have no regrets over what you paid.
