What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

I own one and its a pita. If you have a vehicle 100 percent dead or trying to test a starter it will tell you the leads are reversed. Also the voltage display doesnt work anymore.

 

Changed the rear differential oil after 25k miles. Used Redline 75W85. The oil dint look too bad.
Going to do the front at an interval of 50k miles since I hardly use 4wd. It's probably in good condition given how the rear was. Transfer case will do next, sometime next year.

It was a shit show though. First my torque wrench stopped working. While looking at it, the pump pipe got dislodged from the bottle and oil fell on me. Picking the pipe I banged my head on the spare tire.
A 20 minute job took an hour and I smell of oil and the plugs are not torqued to spec.but, no leaks so I am not going to bother for next 25k miles.

 

Worked on a bunch of design projects, this was one... nifty covers for the new winch bumper's access openings...

 

Ouch. And the rear diff is the easy one.
Tips: Drop that spare tire the next time, you’ll have much more room to work under there. And use the squeeze bottles (3.2 Qts) like Valvoline 75W-90. Much easier to squeeze it in and no pump needed. I used to use Amsoil Severe Gear in the squeeze tubes for 3 changes, but each time the drained oil looked really gray and muddy and had lots of metal debris and sludge on the magnetic drain plug. I don’t think it holds up well. I just changed mine and the Valvoline still looked pretty clear and clean after 15K miles.

 

I just got lazy dropping the spare. I went with Redline simply because of it having the exact OEM viscosity. Valvoline squeeze bags are of course much simpler to use. Suggest me a 1/2 inch torque wrench?

This one has worked OK for me but I only need it every couple of years so not much use. They also have one with a 10-150 range.

yep. i have that one. I use it occasionally. It works. I tested it side by side with a $500 Snap-On wrench and it was spot-on.

 

Yeah I went for the bigger top end version because I think there was still a 3rd gen in my stable at the time and the chance of that 180 ft/lb crank bolt with timing belt changes. In this case it was for the lower link bolts so I could have gotten by with the 150# version, but between this one and my 3/8 craftsman that goes to 75# I have most everything covered short of inch/pounds.

 

In other news I added a Lasfit Pro DC LED kit for my low beams this morning. Easy to do despite kind of crappy instructions.
Remains to be seen if this will end well or poorly.

Those are the fancy lastfit ones.
Maybe bit more effort is needed that their less expensive ones.
Looks like they have couple of coupons already listed on the website. When I buy a set last time for my friend I used browser plugins to find coupons. Joined the full sized spare gang



(I'm still in the camp that a full sized spare is not needed in most cases, but my OEM spare tire was eight years old so I figured a replacement/upgrade was in order)

Yes split beam is more accurate. Tekton’s torque wrenches are all pretty good. For another mid-tier option, go with Icon from harbor freight. Project farm did a review on them and they came in almost at the top.

 

Spent most of the day putting some leather seat cover on. I really like these. They go with the red/black theme I have going inside Casper. Not exactly hard to do, but def labor intensive. Got them from KTJO4x4.

^^ Very nice seat covers! If you know a little old lady with an embroidery machine, this is a nice touch.

 

I hope you start doing a 5 tire rotation, otherwise this tire will sit for 8yrs also and go to waste.

 

I'm conflicted because the cost of another matching wheel is more than the cost of another tire.

What was kinda funny is that Discount Tire ordered their cheapest AT to mount there. When I got there the tire was spec'd at 64 pounds. I was like no Sir, I don't need that. So they put this Wildpeak on for the same price. I was trying to get some bullshit full sized spare, and got a really nice tire for the cheaper price.
