    So curious as to the differences in the 1grfe between the 5th generation 4Runner and let's say what was in the second gen Tacoma. Obviously the variable valve timing thing but why does car care nut not hold the Tacoma version to the same standard as what's in our fifth gens

    Edit: I shouldn't say he doesn't hold it to the same standard but that he doesn't find it as reliable

    Pretty much vvti is the only difference basically the 4th gen 4Runner 1gr and second gen taco 1gr are the same 5th gen got dual vvti so about 40 more hp and about 20ft pounds of more torque

    The tacoma 1grfe has the oil filter on top, which is nice. Probably not worth the trade for the extra horsepower though lol

    2nd gen tacos were made in Mexico or in California
    If your vin starts with j that’s Japan if it starts with 3 that’s Mexico and 5 is the us

    The dual VVT engine has reduced internal friction. I believe there is one less main bearing per what gadget has seen when comparing blocks.

    The dual-VVTi version has slight tweaks here and there, so headgasket leaks and timing cover leaks are less prevalent. There was also a cooling jacket revision to reduce hotspots, so 0W20 oil could be used. The roller rocker valve lifters sound less like a sewing machine. Neither version meets current US emission standards, needing the finicky manifold air injection system for the past decade or so.
