Did you see the difference when he sat in both?

Clearly there wasn't 6 less inches of leg room in the LC.

He even commented on how much more comfortable the backseat of the LC was for an adult vs the 4Runner.

plenty of those imo (each person has their own set of people they follow), scotty, tundradude, im an engineer guy. personally i dont like them but it really doesnt matter. if the other 70-90% of people like his content thats all they care about. but meh, just like anything else they cater to the majority that follow them.

i was ok with tundradude in the beginning, but after a while something just irked me about him. scotty i just cant stand his voice and his delivery of content. im an engineer guy, its only his voice. my ears hurt listening to him.

At this point it seems like Toyota is actively discouraging people from buying their vehicles via the TNGAF platform.

I’ve watched enough TRD Jon videos to know that he is a fan boi and not to take much of what he says seriously. Like I said earlier, why can’t he use a tape measure instead of feelings? Was he one of the clowns claiming the back seat of the new Tacoma pro with the iso seats was fine?

For some reason I followed Tundradude on FB, and don't understand why he makes a big deal about every single 3rd gen Tundra he makes a video on. It's like chill, dude, they're all the same underwhelming truck.

It's like the 1 of 1 Mopar dudes - "this is the only brown over green 69 Dart with ashtray delete built on a full moon" or some other randomness nobody cares about.

I find it odd that Honda is still using their 3.5L NA motor in the Pilot, Ridgeline, and the upcoming passport, and Nissan is still using their NA V6 in the Frontier, while Toyota is just butchering the tough as nails reputation they so carefully cultivated for the 4Runners, Tundras and Tacos over the last 25+ years. WTF indeed.

toyota sells way more Tacomas than 4Runners that’s why they were able to keep the 4.0 v6 while the the 3rd gen Tacoma (2016-2023) got the anemic 3.5 to save one mpg. Since the new taco and new 4Runner will be 100 percent identical they will save a shit ton of money keeping the engines the same im actually legit surprised they’re making the 4Runner still in Japan from a cost production point of view it makes absolutely no sense

The motor in the Honda pilot makes 262 LB/FT of torque at 4700 RPM's, compared to 317 @ 1700 RPM's for the 2T4A. Maybe they wanted to give us more usable power.

Hopefully they can work the bugs out. I was hoping they'd be able to maintain good reliability, but obviously things don't look great right now.

Toyota CEO was replaced by the Lexus and Gazoo Racing chief Koji Sato in April 2023.

Current vehicles are last designs under the old regime. My guess old CEO was feeling the heat and tried to shake things up before he left.

New leadership brings new ideas and direction, but of course we won't see the fruits from new CEO until many years from now.

There much more that makes up a great vehicle than just max horsepower numbers. It’s an SUV not a drag racer.

Notice that I said usable power.

I'm talking about low end torque, which is important for towing, hauling, and off-roading.

It's also one of the things people complain about most with the 1GR.

I used in the first year but as you said it was messy and smelly. This year I used Waxoyl and couldn’t be happier. Bought 3 large cans with 360 degrees spray nozzles and completed the job within 90 minutes. No drip and no mess. It should last for 5 years. Try it next time.

the ceo was akio toyoda grandson of the founder of Toyota he was forced to step down by the board because he was fighting electrification and thought hybrid was the way to go. Also per my Toyota engineer buddy who’s on the truck project team he said under akio there wasn’t much change because he wanted to focus on kaizen (improving on what you have and building on it) he said the new ceo is the one who wanted all these new changes that’s clearly not working

That answers a lot of questions regarding the reliability of the redesigns. It also solidifies my thought about keeping what I have.

Honestly if towing, hauling and off-roading are important I wouldn’t want a 4 cylinder at all. Commuting and carting kids around sure a turbo 4 is fine. If towing and hauling are important though I would get a full size truck not a midsize SUV.

So, you'd rather have a small, naturally aspirated V6 that you'd have to rev the shit out of, over a turbocharged 4 cylinder that makes plenty of low end and midrange power?

Midsize SUV's are fine for light to medium towing. I've towed plenty with 4runners.

What engine are you referring to?
I have a Tacoma and 4Runner both with the 4.0 and never have to rev the shit out of them towing boats or hauling building materials. Before that I had a 4.0 Cherokee and that didn’t need to rev high either. You know what did need the rev high to make power? The WRX and Forester XT I had.

I don't have any trouble towing with my 4Runner, either. But, I've never tried towing with a 3rd gen Tacoma or a Ridgeline. And, from what I've read, the 4th gen Taco tows much better than the third gen did.

Either way, the fact is that the 2.4T makes more torque than the 1GR. So, if you've never had any trouble Towing with a 1GR, the incoming turbo motor will only be better.

Comparing a WRX motor to the new Tacoma/4Runner motor is pretty irrelevant.

Unfortunately I will never be able to test your theory as I will never buy a 4 cylinder as a tow rig. :p

If they wanted more usable power, they could always pair the 4.0L with a gearbox that has more than 5 speeds.

Case in point, Chrysler has been using their NA Port Injection 3.6L Pentastar since 2012 in Wranglers and it has been for the most part fine, they did pair it with a ZF 8 speed for the automatics and from what I hear the 3.6/8HP combo is pretty reliable and not too many people complain about the power.

Sure, I suppose they could do a bunch of extra R&D to satisfy a handful of enthusiasts who don't care about fuel economy.

But, has anyone considered the possibility that Toyota actually believes that the turbo 4 is a good motor? On paper, it's way better than the 1GR.

With all respect they only use it in the us market in the international market the wannabe Land Cruiser gets a diesel engine and 300 series real land cruisers and 70 series get the 1gr still as an option and these are markets where people actually rely on their vehicles off road and it can be life and death to them everyday

not a single 2.4t is used don’t you think if Toyota believed it was actually a decent engine they would have used them like you said on paper the numbers are better

look at the 3rd gen Tacoma and their 3.5 v6 that came out of the sienna and Camry, I’m sure Toyota would have gladly used the 1gr still since they had it in the 2nd gen Tacoma but they switched to the 3.5 2gr because of cafe and epa standards. And again the 3.5 2gr wasn’t used in any other trucks outside the United States and Canada because Toyota knows it’s not a viable real truck engine

Wouldn’t adding a transmission with more gears to the existing engine require a lot less R&D than designing an entire new platform, and drivetrain? The joke is at the end of the day the real world mpgs would probably be pretty similar for each design. Gaining 1 or 2 mpg. Of course “on paper” the turbo 4 probably pretends to be much more efficient.

Yeah, the other engine options we're not getting are probably better. Toyota won't bring a diesel to the US due to emissions/whatever government regulations. And, the 1GR probably can't keep up with new fuel economy and emissions regulations as well.

But, that doesn't mean that Toyota doesn't want the 2.4 to be reliable. Why would they intentionally use a shitty engine when they're perfectly capable of making reliable turbo engines?

They'd have to design a new transmission, ecu, and engine wiring harness completely unique to the 4Runner. By sharing with the Tacoma, most of the R&D is already done.

I'm sure that a 1GR with a better transmission and gearing would get improved fuel economy over the current version. But, would people still complain about the lack of power?
