Toyota has historically proven that it can build high-quality vehicles in North America. The current challenge is maintaining TQM consistency within their ever-expanding supplier ecosystem, with a level of complexity that pushes the limits of Toyota’s otherwise conservative comfort zone. The stress cracks are showing throughout TNGA-F.

In that regard, the Gen5 4Runner in many ways is the antithesis of TNGA-F. The technology and build process is the same as it ever was, and their local suppliers are entrenched and reliable. No vehicle is perfect, but you drive a 4Runner knowing that every little screw or plastic part from every little supplier was also designed 20 years ago, and is still obsessed over daily. Maybe the Gen6 can replicate that, but don’t bet on that happening in the first couple years…

I loved my Maverick, I really did, but its shortcomings became clear driving to NY and back from FL for my husband's dad's funeral in July. Two people and two pets, plus luggage made for close quarters, and I never did buy a bed cover of any sort. A few weeks after returning from NY hubby caved and said "If you want a new vehicle, go get one." I was looking at Subaru Outback and Ford F150's (financing was great with those.) He's not a fan of Subaru and when I commented about the F150 he said, "We don't need another truck." Also considered the Honda Pilot and Passport, but heard rumblings of transmission issues, and man, let me tell you, if you've had transmission issues with a vehicle it will turn you away from a brand for life. (Cough, Mazda.)

Things turned out the way they were supposed to. Finally got a 4Runner.

it’s lanolin (oil from the wool of sheep) you spray it on your frame and every else under your car (safe for rubber seals and paint as well) to prevent rust
I live in SoCal and seen a ton of Toyota trucks that live by the beach here with bubling and flaking rust just by living near the coast

They announced the new 4runner the day after I drove my 2024 home…I have never been so happy with a decision in my life.

What annoys me the most about turning these trucks into Prius’s is the lack of useable storage and rear seat leg room. They have eliminated the reason for having a truck or SUV in the first place. A Camry has more rear leg room than these SUVs and midsize trucks. WTF.

I've sat in the back of a new Land Cruiser. The leg room was absolutely fine. I could see it being an issue if your kids are 6'4 though.

I want a hybrid 4runner (or Land Cruiser) and I'm willing to make a couple of small interior space sacrifices to have one. More low end, usable torque is a big advantage. And it's not some new tech. It's been proven for almost 30 years.

(In best Carl Childer's voice from Sling Blade) "How much of that fluid film you reckon I'll need?"

Was poking around on YouTube the other day and I know people have sent their wives/girlfriends into AutoZone for "blinker fluid," but this chick sent her husband in for a "cooch cup."

How was the leg room compared to your 4Runner? I’d expect more since it’s a bigger vehicle.

1 or 2 aerosol cans will be plenty. Save a little bit to touch up or spray hard to reach area the next time you rotate tires or change the oil. Also I think Blaster Surface Shield is better than Fluid Film. It comes out of the can with a heavier stream so it covers quicker. You can get it at Home Depot.

Maybe. But, the number of drivers who need a truck and want better fuel economy is a lot higher.

If people don't want hybrids, why do they keep buying them?

If they really want a truck with better fuel economy they should buy any truck brand but Toyota. :D
The Maverick is the real answer for high mpg and truck functions.

My Maverick consistently got 25-28mpg city, and 30-33+ highway. That's the only reason I miss it, but then I get into my 4Runner and just smile.

you need about 5 or 6 cans if you don’t live by the beach (like 30 miles or further) I think you’ll be ok without it. The salt air will destroy your rig in a few years if you do (your frame anyway especially the front end of it)

If they did that and keep quality in check, the only people left on 4Runners.com will be soccer moms asking how to operate the 3rd row seat on their 60k 6th gen SR5.

My Corolla came out of there. At almost 20 years old everything is tight and looks almost new with the exception of some dings here and there from parking lot rub-and-runs. It was a UAW plant too so I know there is no excuse for American manufacturing plants to not turn out quality product

I'm pretty sure Toyota would like to avoid this.

There is a 89 T100 on Bring a trailer right now. I'm bidding on it. The exterior is a throw back when they applied three top coats of clear coat. Moonlight cream color, cassette player. I'm hucking the cell phone out the window if i win this bad willy. Any payphones still in existence?

They would really have to nail it with the design. But, I'd probably check one out.

Well their trucks and body on frame SUVs have had the worst fuel mileage for decades. It wasn’t a priority until now. Their buyers were ok with it because it was a trade off for bullet proof reliability. Now they have changed to over complicated power trains but still only get a couple mpgs better.

Roughly the same, but the average sized adult doesn't need anymore.

The specs in the video say 4Runner leg room of 32.9” and the LC legroom 26.7”. That’s a big difference. It would be nice if these YouTubers actually used a tape measure instead of telling us it feels the same.

Where do you get one of those sprayers? Something Autozone would carry?
