2019 TRD PRO DEAD STRUT SOUND AT VERY LOW SPEED

Is the pro’s suspension installed in Japan or are they installed at port?

 

I took it to the dealership when it was cold and drove a tech around their parking lot to demonstrate the sound. It was easily reproducible and he agreed to replace the front shocks. Good Luck!

Toyota dealerships now have a fix and are replacing front shocks to the new 21 shocks.. just had it done today.

 

Have a 2020 and had it in the shop with less than 3000km on it. I’ve had struts fail before so it was pretty easy to diagnose and the dealership agreed to replace the front no questions asked. Took almost 8 weeks to get parts as the claim Toyota keeps them under lock and key to prevent people from buying the parts after market and building their own TRDPro. Just had them installed and the second set does the exact same thing and we’re now back in the shop! They’ve now had it two days trying to diagnose the problem and I’ve argued with them that they received another faulty set but they are making us jump through hoops to make 100% sure that it’s not something else going on. They claim every time they try something, they have to report it to Toyota’s engineers and then wait! It’s now been two days without the 4Runner and no closer to getting a fix.

 

Thanks for the update. From what I understand, the spring perch is now offset, so it doesn’t sit flush. Do you know if they changed out the entire strut and spring assembly or did they just change the strut? I may have been misinformed though. Keep us posted.

 

We had this issue last at the beginning of 2020 with the passenger front. Took a lot of work but we where able to get it covered under warranty. Now the drivers side front and drivers side rear are both doing it. It’s at the dealer now and they tried to blame tires, truck has 25,000 miles on it. When I told them no, then they said possible wheel bearing at rear. The posts about low outside temps and hearing the sound, I live in Arizona and it does it all temps. It is progressively getting worse and sometimes you can feel it in the floor pan.

 

I find it concerning that the 4Runner doesn’t handle any deviation from stock tokico struts
I don’t have the fox setup but the ARB BP51 suspension that has the same thud sound when cold
It’s annoying but does go away quickly I’m also disappointed that product research isn’t as complete as it should be both by Toyota and suspension aftermarket

Entire strut assembly was replaced.

Third brand new set was installed last week, same problem but worse then the second set. New part number from Fox but still see issue. They say it’s highly unlikely that we’ve received 3 bad sets but they’ve now had it in the shop 5 days now and still no closer to figuring it out. The worst part is that the dealer has to troubleshoot with Toyota’s engineers before they’ll do anything. Simple things like “tighten skid plate” ends up wasting a half a day because they do the work, report it back to the engineers and then wait...

You sure the dealer is using the new 2021 shock/strut assemblies as there is a TSB about this issue and the solution is to replace with new 2021 part numbers?

It is easy to to tell as the bottom spring perch on the 2021 assemblies have a jog or offset to seat the coil where the bottom spring perch on the 2019-2020 assemblies are flat/level.

 

The first and second sets were 2020 part numbers and in stock in Toyota Canada’s warehouse from what I’ve been told. Third set supposedly came from Toyota USA warehouse and all they told me was they were a different part number. Not sure if that means they’re 2021s or not but I’ll definitely ask. Thanks for the updates guys! Will report back once it’s fixed for good. Hopefully.

For what it's worth, my 2019 with 6500 miles (bought brand new in March of 2020) just started doing this on the front passenger side. And yes, it is cold up here.

I'm not gonna bother going to the dealer until I know for sure that the updated shocks are out

 

FWIW, I just called FOX and tried to ask them about this issue. I asked them if the clunking was simply a noise issue, or if it could mean that there is a performance or reliability issue. The guy on the phone said he has not heard of this issue, and didn't comment further. I also asked him about performance considerations when lifting on these shocks.. he was not very helpful.. no real response from him there either lol. SMH. I'll give him that it was 8 AM where he works, but still...

Got my 2021 shocks installed yesterday on a 2020 pro. Right part numbers PTR61-89200-LF and PTR61-89200-RF but it seems they installed the -LF on the passenger side and the -RF on the driver side which seems backwards to me? The passenger side seems like a bigger gap between tire and quarter panel so wondering if it really makes a difference if they installed the shocks on the wrong sides, any thoughts?

 

I don't know about 2021 Pro but Usually the driver side has a little more preload on the spring due to higher lower perch, if the numbers do not correspond with the corect side take it back and have it redone good luck the Shocks say on them LF or RF with the numbers

I'm new here and have a 2021 4runner TRD Pro that seems to be having this same issue. My 4Runner has the 2021 updated spring design, but...
I took it in to the dealer in December 2023 because I was hearing the clunking on the drivers side.
The dealer replaced the drivers side shock/strut under warranty (after accusing me of messing with it BTW) and the clunking sound went away.
Fast forward to this past weekend (Nov 2024) and now I'm hearing the clunking on the passenger side.
To say I'm beyond upset over this is an understatement.
I read in several forums that this is a common issue in older TRD Pros and was supposedly resolved for the 2021 model year.
This is apparently not the case and the issue is still ongoing.
Unfortunately, my 4runner is no longer under warranty and I was shocked to find out that a new shock/strut would cost upwards of $900-$1000 + labor!!!
I read in the NHTSA TSB (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10181779-9999.pdf) regarding this issue that both sides of the shock/struts should have been replaced at the same time,
but unfortunately I was not aware of this when I had it serviced while under warranty and now I'm stuck having to repair a ridiculously overpriced shock/strut out of warranty.

What I would like to find out is if anyone knows exactly why this issue occurs and if there is a fix for it other than replacing the shock/strut for $900-$1000 + labor.
If there isn't a fix, I would rather replace the garbage Toyota/Fox parts for something that isn't going to have issues everytime the weather turns cold, perhaps a Bilstein, King, or even a Fox aftermarket alternative that doesn't have this reliability issue.

 

^Fox can rebuild the Pro shock. If you can remove the coilover and remove the spring yourself, you can send the shock in for repair at a lower cost than buying a new one at the Toyota dealer.

 

It might be worth a call to Accutune, they know their way around Fox products and may have some ideas on how to address it.
