3rd Gen Antenna mast issue

Replaced my antenna mast 1998 , easy enough. When I turn the radio on the mast extends and the motor continues to run for 15 seconds. No issue when retracting.

I don't see the problem, the motor is supposed to run when you turn on the radio- that's how the mast extends

When the mast is fully extended do you hear the motor make any grinding sounds as it keeps running?

If not reinstall the mast. When the mast reaches the end the motor will be stopped from moving, which will spike the current demand that a computer detects to know when to shut it off. At least that's my theory after and not seeing any switches inside.

I know if the mast were still in mesh with the drive gear it'd make an awful sound if it kept turning. So if it isn't in mesh with the gear, the motor will keep turning with no resistance until a certain time has passed. It goes back down because of gravity.

 

The motor mKes that awful grinding noise for 15 seconds after fully extended. Did I replace the mast incorrectly? THANKS AGAIN

 

Did you try reinstalling the mast? I think if your motor is making a grinding sound it's an issue with the motor.

Does the motor turn itself off when it retracts?

 

Yes, the motor shuts off when it retracts. I will try to reinstall. Thank you.

 

Did you make sure that the mast you removed had the same length of "bendy whip with teeth" as the new one? It must be exactly the same.

If not, a piece was left in the motor unit or your new one is incorrect.

This can cause issues.

 

Tried to reinstall again. Motor continues to run for 15 seconds when mast is fully extended. Oh well
