I did not want to drop $100 to buy the black shift knob and assumed there was a way to take apart the shifter so it can be painted. I tried searching previous posts but didn't find anything regarding it.

The aftermarket ones do not have TRD embossed on top and look of less quality for $25.

Grab a plastic pry tool and was able to take it apart.

Toyota parts manufacturer did use a silicone to attach the larger silver trim piece to the main body of the shifter along the back side.

Essentially the lower small silver piece pops off easily with minimal work. The larger piece takes a bit of patience and working to release the silicone or whatever thin bodied adhesive they used.

Too late it in the evening to start prep and paint but will update once I get it back together.

Will have to give the transfer case shifter a go next so they match.

I already dropped the $100 on the oem transmission knob swap....but i'd be really interested to see how you make out with the transfer case knob. I'm hoping you demonstrate that the cap can easily be popped off to save me another $50. If I had the name of the guy who decided to put all the chrome and shiny shit in the ORP interior i swear I'd challenge him to Fight Club.
