Wannabe 5th Gen Owner

I am considering a 2016 4Runner SR5 with 158,000 miles. I have read that these 4Runners can last up to 300,000 miles. It appears to be in really good condition and only had one owner. Is it common for them to last 300,000 miles and what kinds of repairs can I expect in the future. Thank you in advance.

 

They will last for as long as they are maintained and repaired. The same is true for most other vehicles.

In the future you can expect to repair the front differential needle bearing, the front differential disconnect actuator, the timing cover seal, the transfer case actuator, control arm ball joints, tcase and rear axle seals, and rust.

 

Buying with that mileage, a documented service history would be mandatory for me. In addition to regular oil changes, you'll want to see the other fluid flushes, spark plugs replacement, battery replacement(s), new rotors and pads, etc. Also, coming up on 10 yrs old with that mileage the shocks and struts are likely nearing end of life. Most importantly, lookout for real rust underneath. Rust is the #1 killer of 4R's.

 

I have a 2017 SR5 with 62,000 miles. I had major tranny/torque converter promlems at 48,000 miles that required replacement under warranty (fortunately) invoice dealer to Toyota was like $8k by time problem Flex lock issue was resolved. Problem was a solenoid & valve inside tranny valve body.
My belief is 4runners and Toyota made components are solid but the outsourced components maybe less reliable.
Lube of engine, tranny, differentials, transfer case, drive/propeller shafts must be done on schedule. Then at that high mileage expect rubber bushings may need replacement in suspension. Also it should have its second or third set of shocks by now.
So detailed maintenance records a must! Have you purchased a CarFax history on this 4runner. Is it from the Salt roads rust part of country?
Personally I would look at the Toyota certified used vehicle website for a lower mileage SR5, without any frame rust and excellent timely maintenance.

 

Yes, they can go up to 300k (or more) miles. If the maintenance is kept up. That's the key. Also, depending on what area of the country the vehicle was owned in, check for rust. But get the service history.
