Rust spots on hood

I noticed the weld spots on the inside of my hood are rusting through to the exterior of the hood. Anyone have this issue? If so, anyway to correct?

 

Not much to go on here...year? Model? Location? All those may be contributing factors.

 

2012 4Runner SR5. It’s the spot welds under the hood where the shell of the hood connects to the inside frame of the hood.

 

Well, I was hoping you might say where you lived, not where the rust spots were. That would add information as to whether you lived in an area where rust can really be an issue for vehicles. As stated above, photos would be helpful.

As far as your other question, yours is the first I've heard of this happening.

 

Without photos it is hard to make an informed opinion. Are the other rust prone parts also corroding such as fasteners in the engine compartment and undercarriage? Do you drive on
salted winter roads and then leave it parked in a humid environment? Thirteen years in such an environment would lead to rust in many areas. If you are the second owner, perhaps
it was crashed and repaired poorly...the list goes on.

 

I have attached pictures. I live in Birmingham AL but my son drives it and goes to school in Lakeland FL. I brought it from a small car dealer five years ago. The carfax said the car was bought in AL. It has only been driven in AL and FL as far as I know.

Any evidence the hood was not factory painted?

My gut feel is that it might be a replacement or repaired hood.

 

Exactly this. Sounds like a non-OEM replacement hood with poor paint prep.

 

Just out of curiosity, what color is the exterior of the vehicle and what's the paint code on the door jamb?

 

I agree it looks like a non OEM hood. OEM is body color with an insulating pad.

 

The OEM hood doesn't have a weld there. Toyota uses globs of panel adhesive between the inner and outer sheetmetal layers of the hood. The adhesive is known to crack in some cases, leading to increased hood flutter at highway speeds, but no corrosion. I suspect your hood was previously repainted, maybe for stone chip repair.

The insulating pad was introduced later. Early 5th gens (like my 2010) never had it.

 

Don’t factory panels come with toyota parts labels? Should be easy enough to see if it’s a toyota hood.
