Bolt holding my shock broke off yesterday and I’m not sure how to get the broken part out. I trying drilling it out and using a tap, but the tap broke off in it. Any suggestions?

Also, the bushing and other hardware are gone and need some suggestions of what to buy.

Not mechanically inclined, and very sad that I can’t drive my baby :(

I read somewhere the stud that the lower shock mounts on has a deep threaded hole in center.
Meaning if you manage to extract the broken bolt and hardened steel broken tap stuck in it-you may have some threads left deep to hold a longer mounting bolt.
Heat and quench multiple times is a classic technique to loosen frozen bolts. If you can get it to move a tiny bit I would soak it with Kroll brand liquid wrench. Maybe it will turn a bit more.

Was the tap you broke a reverse type tap for extraction or were you trying to make new threads?[

I am sure you are not the only person to face this problem

Oof, how does it have that much rust for a CA vehicle?

Get a neighbor or buddy to weld a nut to it to remove it.

I'd take it to a shop. Once you get a hardened tap in there, you may be screwed on a DIY level.

Not seeing it in person, but....it should not be a real big deal. I replaced many broke off shock mounting studs over the years. Grind it flush and drill out hole and install new stud.

It's going to be a good trick to drill out a broken off hardened tap though. I know I have nothing that will touch that...and I have a ton of tools for a DIY person...left handed drill bits and all.

I guess I'd probably have to plunk down for something like this:

Well considering location a cutting torch could be used.

If anyone cares, I used a biblical amount of zip ties ton keep the shock in place while I figure the rest out. I’ve been waiting for the OEM bolt to come in and I have a friend who says he can weld a piece of all-thread to it and then we can back out the tap and original bolt.

Ended up buying a new shock because I thought that it would come with the bolt and bushings (which it didn’t) so I figure I’ll throw them on anyways

Thank you everyone for all the help!
