Tire options - OEM Dunlop reviews are not great for Snow

NO 55mph on PA NE Ext during snow storm in the Tacoma for one. Look Turd just because you don't Like them doesn't mean they're garbage. Like I said are there better ones out there? Hell yes

 

It worked. The rear end kept coming around on her. I was very confused when she told me that. I would give it more gas and keep going, she got scared and things didn’t go well.

 

No offense but that’s not smart. I spend a lot of time driving in the snow. If it’s snowing then I’m on the road going snowboarding. The amount of people I see spin out on the highway and in the ditch is insane. Most of them are pick ups and SUVs. A real snow tire or an aggressively sipped all terrain is the smart choice.

 

None taken. It was straight mostly & no one was around or I would've driven slower. My point that even the light a$$ pickup had no issues W/OEM tires. So far the best vehicle I've owned for the snow were the two FJ's 2008 & 2012. the 2 4Runners 2018 & current 2023 are 2nd best. The 1998 Explored Sport was a close 3rd. I just hope we get some snow this year, Wantta play W/ new Polaris Sportsman 570 EFI EPS plowing. Neighbors love me fo doing driveways & the side walk.

 

I had ~50 miles on my SR5P when I replaced the Dunlops with Michelin Defenders. I sold the take-offs for half of what their retail price was. They were gone in a day or two. Offset the cost of the Michelins. Another factor to consider in this debate is your insurance deductible. Mine is $1k. If those upgraded tires do their job and keep you out of a ditch just once, they could easily pay for themselves. Plus the time and hassle of being in a ditch.

Your vehicle, your tires. Do what your wallet and risk tolerance allows.

 

I pride myself on being a good driver, and have survived many winters with 2WD trucks and shitty tires, but the deductible alone is where I justified the purchase of my studded winter tires. Plus they will extend the lifetime of my new AT tires for summer.

 

Another vote for the AT4W.
I was between the Baja Boss AT or the AT4W.

The beefy sidewall is what sold me on the Falkens.

 

Yep. I used to daily a Trans Am in the winter in Massachusetts, I made it, but it wasn't a smart choice.

That's funny. I spent a winter in Lake Tahoe with a 1988 Formula 350 Firebird on Goodyear gatorbacks, pretty much the same car. It was entertaining and I was young and stupid. Thinking back on it... not something I would recommend.

 

Did it backfire in between gears?

I used to make friends ride back there if they wanted a ride. They hated it.

 

I doubt you made many friends if they had to ride back there with six cinder blocks.

 

Nice! Mine was a 88 trans Am GTA, with the 350. Such great cars, so underrated.

Driving them in the snow was fun, but also terrifying, haha. I remember one time driving the last few miles home during a snowstorm basically sideways down the highway, the rear just wouldn't hook, I had to give it just enough gas to maintain forward motion without it sliding completely around.

 

I just upgraded to Nokkian outpost nat, they've been great so far. I posted a review on here a few days ago.

 

I ran my Dunlops for 48k miles, never had issues in the snow. Only had issues in the rain the last 5k miles I had them as the back end always wanted to fishtail. I replaced them with Toyos, but not until I needed to. If I had money to burn I may have replaced them earlier, but then again probably not.

 

@OP Don't mess around with safety and get proper winter tires. I recommend Michelin Ice-X. 4WD does not help you stop or turn, winter tires do.

 

Ha. It's good way to dissuade rides.
