I have always wanted a 4runner. Looking at two right now. 2017 with 44,000 miles but was at the coast for a year and has a little bit of corrosion underneath and back not bad rust though. Or a 2019 with 80,000 miles that has not been in a salty area. Both are limited models. One blue one white. Any opinions? Is one year better than the other? Does the mileage really matter in the grand scheme of things? Thank you for any advice.

Any photos of the undercarriage of each? The miles are of less concern. The most important things would be rust (or lack thereof), whether everything works, and maintenance history.

Given this choice, I'm going to go with the 2019. Mileage doesn't matter provided it's got a maintenance history. I agree with @glwood54 and to make a fair assessment more information and some pictures would help.

    Your title has a typo.

I would get the one with the best maintenance records and no crashes.

That’s a tough one. Was it really at the coast for just a year? Was either in a place where the roads get salted for long stretches? Was the coast one stored in a garage? To me 44k miles difference is pretty big. Really depends on the price

id rather have the lower mileage one. You could always have the rust removed and spray protect the undercarriage.

Are they identical models? or is one a 2wd sr5 and one a off road. That and cost is what id look at more than milage or year. 5th gens are 5th gens.

The newer one with more mileage is 3500 less and no rust. The 2017 with 45k miles needs new struts they say.

I own a 2017 SR5 has about 63k miles. Jan 2024 I found a 2019 SR5 50k miles, no rust and super clean inside, out side & under. No rust anywhere.
It was a Toyota CPO with Gold warranty. Car Fax showed no issues. We bought it for my daughter and her young family since she likes mine.
The tranny, diffs , TC, & propeller/drive shafts showed no evidence of prior service so all got new lube.
Most people think engine oil change is the only lube maintenance a vehicle needs.
I would pick the no rust higher mileage IF properly maintained.
Cleaning and treating surface rust & painting & sealing is a lot of work to do correctly-
    Maybe keep looking?
The Toyota Certified Used website provides a search by model and area anywhere in the Country.

Best would be to pay for a pre purchase inspection.

Me personally skip anything with rust as Toyota have rust issues in history.
I would skip white as many brands including Toyota and Lexus have white paint issues.
I would also check closely at shocks on Limited trim 4runners as XREAS are know for leaks, some only get low miles and some are lucky to get high miles. At some point it will leak. To replace xreas it will cost arm and a leg, unless replaced with regular shocks all 4 corners for cheap.

Oops. The 2017 has 45k miles. Asking 39k. The 2019 has 80k miles asking 34.5k. 2019 has very clean carfax. 2017 needs new struts and started as a lease vehicle.

The 2017 shows a bit of corrosion and rust. 2019 is clean.

2019 for the win (from those 2)

The price difference makes up for the milage and with the clean carafe on the 2019 and knowing the 2017 is a rental I wouldn't even consider the 2017 for 4500 more.

That seems like a lot of money for a 2017. I paid $49k for a 2023 Pro with 14k miles. Expand your search. I flew to Minnesota to get mine, it was $4000 less than here in St. Louis.

agreed. My 2022 was $36k with 3 miles on it.

It was actually less, I had a typo. I wrote them a check for $33.5k in April 2022 and no that is not a down payment.

Welcome. If you have your mind set on one of the two, then at least have a pre purchase inspection done before committing to anything.

Still pleased with the 30k I spent on my 2013 SR5 4x4 that I then traded in 11 years later for 21k towards my 23 ORP. Love the resale value of the 4Runner.

I think his point is a receipt for a check received is not proof of the sales amount of the 4R, with nothing else to compare it to. It's proof that you wrote a check and they received it.

    Whatever.
