Steering wheel went out

1987 sr 22 put it in four wheel drive and went to back up and heard a loud pop , and now the steering wheel just went out ? Has been leaking transmission fluid and the whining sound of power steering pump has been happening for a while .

 

Your serpentine belt may have broken.

 

Ok thanks for input it’s my dads truck he’s done a lot to it as far as replacements it happened when he put it in 4 wheel drive and he cut it pretty sharp and popped and then his steering wheel will turn completely around and around but no steering . Thought it might be the axle but I don’t know too much about vehicles .

 

What exactly do you mean the "steering wheel went out", are you saying it's very hard to turn or it doesn't move the wheels when you turn the steering wheel?

 

It turns freely but doesn’t turn the wheels

 

Could it be the gear box?

 

Sorry, I figured you meant that it was hard to turn the wheel. I've never heard of the steering wheel turning freely, there's probably something else going on.

 

I just saw your reply above, it sounds like the "rag" joint and or the u-joint has sheared, look under the hood at the steering column, follow it down you should be able to see what broke by having someone turn the steering wheel while another looks at the column.

Edit: Yes it could be the steering box, and or some of the linkage to the wheels.
