IMG_5866.jpg Hey everyone, new T4R owner. 2024 SR5 premium! Quick question, I’ve looked everywhere but couldn’t find an answer or what to call it. What is the plastic square in the grill and what’s its intended purpose? Thanks everyone!

    Proximity sensor array for TSS

    https://www.toyota.com/content/dam/toyota/brochures/pdf/tss/CFA_TSS_3.pdf

Crazy as it might sound there is an entire section in your owners manual on this starting on page 232 with the sensor pointed out on page 233.

Just for good measure, this is what you get when you Google search "black plastic plate behind front grill 5th gen 4runner". The very first result is a reddit thread providing the answer in the first response.

Welcome to the forum from North Carolina.

Probably close to 100 or more pages covering multiple aspects of TSS in the owners manual. When time permits check out all of the function/nannies it can provide. Most can be shut off based on your preferences.

Just another 'nanny' feature to help those in need.
So glad my '16 doesn't have that.

If this thread is what you think being ripped apart is, I would suggest logging off this site and never visiting the other one

@Sippingonlunch, Welcome and don’t be too put off by the rocky reception you got to your first post. It’s just that your question was sooo basic it took on a suspicious air, like a troll post.

I was ultimately quite helpful I thought even while rubbing it in a little in good humor.

I wouldn't have been snarky at all had the request of a first time poster not started with "...I've looked everywhere..."

Nonetheles, @Sippingonlunch, welcome to the forum.

Hazing the new guy is just our way of saying "Welcome to the NFL, rookie!"

If you think this was bad, you should see our "What's the biggest sized tires I can put on my 4Runner" threads. We really rumble in those threads. Don't even get me started on the oil change threads.

Didn’t mean to come off like I was offended or anything. After reading my post and the answers, realize it wasn’t the best question, nor did I really put that much effort into looking I guess! Haha but glad to be here and part of the community! And to know I can come here for all the answers, with some comedy! Thanks again!

Too bad the OP didn’t get any correct answers to such a basic question.

It’s purpose is to collect snow during a light dusting of flurries and immediately disable the radar.

He did. The 2nd post (basically) told him to RTFM! :)

But you're right about it collecting dust/dirt/snow and then being worthless.

Yep, clogs up the fluter valve and if not dealt with immediately the fallopian tubes explode! :bananadead:

Forget the square rectangle. What's with Toyota replacing the upper grille that matched the lower grille with one that has two chrome bars since 2020?
