I'm finding conflicting information in regards to the older style metal valve stem TPMS sensors vs the rubber stem type that come on newer 4Runners.

My scenario is that I'll be trading in my 2021 4R next week for a 2024 but keeping the wheels and tires from my existing 4R and having the dealer swap them onto the new 4R before delivery. The 2021 has the order style metal valve stem sensors while the 2024 has the newer rubber type.

Can the metal type sensors be registered to the 2024 and the rubber type to the 2021? In both trucks I can go into the gauge cluster to register and initiate new sensors but does anyone know if there is a difference (physical or otherwise) l between the two types of sensors that will prevent that from from being accomplished?

From what I understand the 315MHz frequency hasn't changed between the 2 types, just the style of valve stem.

The rubber is superior for any off-road vehicle. If you rub a rock with rubber there is a chance it will not fail on you and cause an immediate flat.

Wife got a 2024 TRD Pro, built 03/24 and it has metal TPMS sensors on all 4 wheels.
Checked just now. (Too dark here for a good photo; you'll have to trust me)
They seem to be protected fairly well by the wheel "spokes" so I'm not worried about them getting snapped off in the woods.

Interesting, that would lead me to believe that the metal stemmed sensors will work. If it's not too much trouble to ask could you post a pic? Maybe one where you can see the Terra color with the wheel?

Interesting. My 2024 Limited (bought at the end of March 2024) has rubber stems. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this.

For future reference, the dealer did the swap today and the metal stemmed sensors worked with no issue on the 2024 4R and the rubber stemmed sensors worked on the 2021.

Got some new TRD Off-Road wheels (take-offs at the dealership) for my wife's winter tires on her Pro. Pretty sure they are 2024.

OEM TPMS in place, and they have rubber stems.IMG_9793.jpg

That must be why our Pro has the metal stems....told the wife she now has to keep it under 130 mph (210 km/h) on the winters.
