Ok, so I have seen this complaint around to internet quite a few times. I have been diligently trying to chase down my issue. My 02Limited has no CEL’s and drives pretty normal except when I come to a stop and then try to accelerate. If I jab to throttle, it goes good. If I softly accelerate, it will sometimes be very slow and eventually will take off. My initial thought was the tranny not downshifting, but this will also happen when in first gear. So the things I have done so far to try and fix this: new TPS, clean TB, check all vacuum lines, adjust throttle cable, checked plugs, new fuel filter.
Skid control light does not flash at all so I’m certain that is not interfering with power.
I’m at a loss now and hate throwing parts at it. My instincts are saying it’s a TB issue, but that’s a lot of $ for a new one, especially if it’s not the issue. Any ideas might help. Anyone ever disassemble a TB?Lol

I would check the transmission oil level, check air filter, check gap or change spark plugs and clean the MAF. My .02 G.L.

You may have a bad Pedal Position Sensor. There are some writeups on how to fix those since they aren't available.

Another alternative is get an entire Throttle Body assembly which is what I did. It fixed a ton of issues (surging with AC on, low idle, hesitation on acceleration, etc). Only get this from TOYOTA.

My feeling it's going to be in your Throttle Body. The ECU isn't getting the correct signal to accelerate.

If you didn't get a DENSO or TOYOTA TPS, I'd also suspect that. Non-OEM sensors are complete trash.

Also, here is my tear down of a 2002 Throttle Body: There are a lot of parts in there. I felt it was worth the money for a new one at the time. But like anything it's really hard to know what fixes the issue. For me it was a big win.

Quick update: I made an attempt to repair the pps. I’m no stranger to electronics and soldering so I sucked out the solder and re flowed the 4 connections. Unfortunately it became worse, so I did it all over again and it improved slightly. I’m thinking the potentiometer inside has just worn out. Now I’m waiting on a relatively low mile used one.
I was also chasing another issue; loud clunking when shifting! Now after reading more threads on this issue, I feel like it is related to the bad pps.
